Heir to the Undead Throne
Tyler woke to the sun shining bright through his window.
He knew he should already be at school. His brother, Jake, had forgotten to get him up a few times. Mom, though, never let him sleep in. He didn’t even hear Sarah, his younger sister, up.
Wondering to himselfif maybe everybody was sick.
Perhaps the power had gone out, and messed up all the clocks. Whatever was going on Tyler was just happy not to have school. So long as nobody else got up.
Laying there in bed, so he wouldn’t get in trouble if Mom or Dad didn’t came in. Listening. He started to think, “Go back to sleep.” Then, feeling his stomach growl at him. He told himself, “Hust a little longer. Just till it is to late, and would be counted absent even if went to school. Then I can getup. Then I can eat.”
After what he thought was forever, and he just couldn’t stand being hungry anymore. Tyler decided that he was going to try and sneak out for breakfast. If they caught himall he has to say is, “I thought there was no school today. Jake usually wakes me up, or Mom.” I won’t get in to any trouble. Hopefully it has been long enough that school is done.
Listening up next to the door. Then, slowly easing it open, to just a crack. Holding his breath. As the door made a creak.
Slippingin to the hallway he felt like a ninja from those movies Jake loved to watch. Creeping toward the kitchen he stopped, and listened at each of his sibling’s rooms. Even at the bathroom. Just in case. He heard Jake snoring, and nothing from Sarah’s room, or bathroom.
When Tyler got to the end of the hall, once again he searched for signs of anyone being awake. Still finding nothing. Stalling at the corner unsure how to continue. Should he crawl over to the kitchen attepmting stealth mode. If caught they would know he was sneaking, and trying to skip school. The other option just walk on through livingroom like it’s the weekend, for his ruse.
Stuck there for minutes that seemed to stretch for hours. His heart pounding in his chest. So loud he swore it would wake everyone up, even the neighbors. Yet still not a single person seemed to be awake.
Finally, Tyler got his feet moving. Slowly, step by step, out, into, and across the room. Safe all the way into the kitchen. Now for some food.
Nothing that required to much making. For fear of noise, and even smell might stir somebody from slumber. Tyler quietly ate cerea, an orange, and cold poptarts.
When he finished he went to sink rinsed bowl put in dishwasher, and hid peel with wrapper under some other trash in the can.
Now Tyler just had to make it back to his room. Just through the livingroom and down the hall. Then everything woulod be fine.
He didn’t even make it halfway through the livingroom.
Tyler froze as his parents door opened. Fear chilled him to the bone, dryed out his mouth, and put him to sweats.
His mom walked out. Seeing him standing there she startled. Tyler thought he could see fear in her eyes. He knew by the redness there she had been crying.
He wondered what could possibly be going on.
“Tyler,” She said, and he knew she was about to start getting on to him. Instead, “Go wake up your brother.” Was all she said.
Answering quickly, “Yes ma’am.” Walking off. Hoping it was late enough that he wouldn’t have to go to school.
As he got to the cornerof the hall. His mom added, “Tell Jake we are having a family meeting in my room.”
“O.K.” He replied behind himself.
