Pack Over Pride
The air smelled different. This was an instant shift so sudden that it woke Snow. Looking around seeing that most all the pack was waking up. Every single one sniffing searching for source of this altered smell. It seems like the whole world has changed tonight.
Dusk, the prime, decided they needed to search the area. Seeing if they could find anything that may have changed. So a party was to be formed.
Dusk was to lead. He decided his seconds, the twins Shadow and Night, are going to stay at Den. Dusk claimed to protect the pack. The power struggle for leadership had started two winters ago. Dusk using this to show he can still hunt. While keeping the seconds out of some glory, if there was any at all to find.
The others that were chosen to go or stay, were not of much consequence.
Till the end.
That’s when Dusk came over to the youngsters.
Snow, Wind, and Cloud were told that they allowed to go on the first outing. All three jumped around rolled on the ground giddy.
Till Dusk snapped. “There will be order. You will do as I say.” He growled.
The three all lowered their heads, shameful, whimpering, “Yes.” Quietly.
The group, a total of seven, systematically scoured over their Den’s lands.
When they were done, and began heading out in to the Hunting area. Snow had to ask a question. “Dusk, we youngsters have never been this far from the Den. How will know if anything is changed?”
Dusk turned, and smiled. “That is exactly why I brought you three. None of you know this area. So all you will do is examine everything.”
Copper whispered something to Dirt that made them both snicker. Which got them both a snarl from Dusk.
All through the Hunt land the three youngs did exactly what Dusk said. Sniffed and pawed at anything that caught their attention. Everytime that they thought found something, one of the others said it was nothing different than what it was before.
Through most of the day, this is what repeatedly occurred.
When Father Sun left the sky, and Mother Moon shined in her glory above. The gave a howl out asking for her blessing, and showing her love, honor, respect.
Snow silently added, “Let us figure out this mystery. Please.”
Dusk now decided that this investigation was over. He was hungry. Also to bring back food would show the rest of the pack everything is fine.
So now, They were a hunting party.
They tracked down a herd of deer within a few hours. Just milling about in a field near a stream. Dusk then proceeded to give each their tasks. The young were to start the chase. Forcing the deer toward the trees because the water would cut off the other option of escape. The others would be waiting to ambush.
The three waited as they were told to till the appropriate time. Then Cloud let out a long and loud howl.
All the deer froze. Ears, eyes, and noses on high alert. Wind was near the stream on the southern side of the clearing. For he was the swiftest.
Snow and Cloud at the western side.
