It was a wonderful, warm summer morning. Max pulled on his shorts and walked across the garden to his treehouse. He`s been looking forward to playing with Stefan since the previous evening. Stefan was his friend, they saw each other every day. When Max got to the treehouse, Stefan was already there. The day before, they had started carving small boats from wood, which they wanted to set afloat in the village stream that day.
“Hi, Stefan,” said Max. Stefan didn’t answer, just nodded. They sat down on the floor of the treehouse and carried on carving. They had already finished two boats and now they were working on the bigger boat. It was even going to get a red sail that Max‘s mum had made from an old cloth the day before. Max was going to have a bite to eat with Stefan in the treehouse today, he’d brought a sandwich with him from home. Stefan didn’t eat anything but just waited until Max had finished.
Once their meal was over, they climbed out of the treehouse and walked down to the stream. They had found a place where the water didn’t flow so fast and where the boat wouldn’t get carried off on the waves.
Just as they were about to put the boats in the water, three boys from the village came around the hedge right next to the stream. They went up to Max: “Hey, what are you doing here? Oh, he’s built a boat, how cute… Go on, show it to me!” Max hugged the boat tightly, he didn’t want to hand it over. He knew these boys, they were a few classes above him and they were always bothering everyone.
