Beschreibung

Jeet Kune Do is a modern system of self-defence based on the teachings and philosophy of Bruce Lee, the King of Kung Fu. JKD is built on Simplicity, Directness, Efficiency and Speed. It encapsulates all four fighting distances (Kicks, Boxing, Close Combat and Ground Combat) and uses specific Strategies, Concepts and Principles. JKD is constantly developing and encompasses the dangers of modern life, so that, after the early demise of its founder, it lives on through his friend and heir Dan Inosanto. This book serves to teach from level 1 to 3, although it introduces other developing areas. It is useful for any interested reader, who is involved in understanding a realistic method of self defence developed by Bruce Lee. It also serves as a support for every sportsperson and Martial Artist. Style is totally irrelevant, as Jeet Kune Do can be used for or against any style, freely using the motto "using no way as a way". "Having no limitation as limitation" Bruce Lee.

Preface. Ralph Fischer

I have been contemplating writing a book about Jun Fan / Jeet Kune Do for some time, to pass on my over 40 years of experience in the martial arts to anyone who is interested. Unfortunately, as is so often the case, it remained a pipe dream for a long time due to the lack of time and right partners to work with. As you can see, thanks to a book author who animated me to write this book, this dream has now become a reality. I would like to give you the opportunity to get an idea of the concept and philosophy of Jun fan / Jeet Kune Do, to get an overview of the realistic self-defence of Bruce Lee. Of course, you cannot pack the entire wealth of knowledge of this unique martial art into one book, but the most basic elements are conveyed.

The content of the book consists largely of the basis of level 1-3 of the official training program of the Jun Fan / Jeet Kune Do Academy International by Udo Müller Germany, but other areas are also covered. It should also be noted that this book is not a substitute for a qualified teacher to properly study and understand this system. To do this, one should attend a recognized school under qualified guidance. But it should serve to arouse your interest in this art.

Thanks to Sifu Dan Inosanto and only a few others, Jeet Kune Do did not die after Bruce Lee’s death and to this day, has further developed into one of the world’s most effective systems of self-defence. The concept, principals and strategies can be used for or against any martial arts or Fighting Sport, so that JKD can be found not just in Self-defence but has also found its place in MMA and other Combat forms, which proves its effectiveness. Also my pupils are very successful in different Amateur and Professional events in various disciplines such as K/1 Kickboxing, MMA, BJJ and Grappling represented, and can also fight in German, Europe and World Titles. In my Academy the individual Fighting Systems are taught in addition to JKD training as they are bound by particular rules that form the basic structure and forms, but still remain Jeet Kune Do. Naturally I would like to awaken your interest in Jun Fan Martial Arts and it would please me greatly if, with this book, I could encourage you to visit a recognised Jeet Kune Do school in order to study and learn about this unique Art.

Now, I wish you much enjoyment rading this Lesson!!!

Sifu/Guro Udo Müller

Sifu/Guro Udo Müller is the Head Instructor of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do / Filipino Kali Academy Germany. The only recognized Sifu/Guro Dan Inosanto Organisation in German speaking countries.

Stops on Sifu/Guro Udo Müller’s journey:Sifu Udo Müller began his career in Martial Arts in 1976 in Judo and Karate. A year later he encountered Peter Morales and Hung Sui, who taught him about Won Hop Kuen Do Kung Fu from A Dacascos. In 1978 he achieved Second place in his first All-Style-Competition.

In his active, competitive life he fought over 100 times achieving between 1st to 3rd place.

In 1979 for the first time, he encountered Filipino Martial Arts, and began training Modern Arnis until 1982. In 1981 he began training Wu Shu for the first time, with Hung Sui.

In 1983 the foundation was doubtless laid for the development and birth of, what is today an enormous following, of Jeet Kune Do and Filipin Martial Arts. Udo Mueller met, for the first time, in Los Angeles Sifu/Guro, Dan Inosanto, from whom he discovered, and was instantly taken with, a whole new Art of Stick Fighting which he absolutely wanted to learn. In the same year he took part in Ed Parker’s “International”, which took place in Long Beach. He achieved third place in weapons. A further year later in 1984 he flew to the United States for three months to train with Dan Inosanto Kali and Jun Fan Kung Fu and Roger Tung Wu Shu.

In 1985 Udo Mueller opened his Sport Academy in Roemerberg near Speyer. In the following year he was named “Apprentice Instructor“ for Kali and Jun Fan Kung Fu. In the same year he enjoyed regular training in Wu Shu with Keith Hirabashi and met Wu Mei Ling who he selected as his first pupil. In 1987 he travelled to China to further perfect his Wu Shu technique. In the same year, he invited Sifu Dan Insosanto, for the first time, to a seminar which at the same time became “ground zero for Kali in Germany, spurred on by the enormous success of the seminar Udo Mueller began to give seminars all over Germany and to invite further Martial Arts Legends to Germany, amongst whom were Larry Hartsell (1988), Cass Magda (1992) and Edgar Sulite (1995) for each, this was their first Seminar in Germany. In 1990 Sifu Udo Mueller, accompanied by his Kali pupils undertook a training trip in the USA which became a solid fixture in his Academy. In 1991 Dan Inosanto named Udo Mueller “Associate Instructor. The title a reward for his pioneering work in relation to Kali and Jeet Kune Do. Since 1996 Udo Mueller is “Full Instructor under Dan Inosanto. In the meantime ,Udo Mueller still runs his Sports Academy in Roemerberg

which takes place in a 1000m2 newbuild and where he also, with his wife and two sons, lives.

Udo Mueller still visits the United States regularly to train in the Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts.

His organization, in the meantime, has instructors in Germany, Austria, Belgium and Switzerland and is steadily growing.

Sifu/Guro Dan Inosanto

IF you have seen “Game Of Death“ you will know the “Man with the head band“ in the Nunchaku fight, Dan Inosanto (full name: Daniel Arca Inosanto).

He was Bruce Lee’s friend and training partner and is one of the certified teachers under Bruce Lee, who may teach Jeet Kune Do.

Dan Inosanto’s interest in Martial Arts began at 10 years of age. His Uncle Vincent Evangelista tried to inspire him in Okinawa Te and Ju Jitsu. Insosanto didn’t know, at this point that his uncle was also a fencer.

Inosanto’s interest developed in the next 10 years mostly in football. It was his favourite sport in High School. After College in 1957 he returned to his hometown Stockton and resumed his training under Yoshimura. In 1959 Dan Inosanto was conscripted into the “101st Airborne Division” as a parachutist. When he was in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, looking for Judo he met Henry Slomansky, who was a Chito-Ryu-Instructor.

His stay in Fort Campbell gave him a taste of different Karate styles and in many other Combat Arts from all over the world. During this time he discovered Keppo Karate for himself.

When Inosanto was released from the Army, he moved to Los Angeles. His interest in Keppo Karate brought him to Ed Parker (Father of American Karate). Ed Parker changed Inosanto’s path in Combat Arts.

One day Parker said to Inosanto “Have you ever seen the Art of Escrima?” Insosanto replied “Stick fighting“Ed Parker retorted “No, it’s more than Stick fighting.“

From this time onward began Inosanto’s initiation into the world of Martial Arts. He travelled to his father in Stockton where Stick fighting was only taught to Filipinos. Sebastian Inosanto knew many famous Stick fighters, so introduced Dan Inosanto to the first three. Who were Max Sarmiento, Angel Cabales and Johnny Lacoste.

At this time Dan Inosanto earned a reputation as a man who can listen and learn. So began a time when doors were opened for him everywhere in the Philippine Community.

In 1964, Ed Parker invited Bruce Lee to an International Karate Competition, to present his Martial Arts to a much wider Public. This is where Dan Insosanto met Bruce Lee for the first time. The meeting was frustrating for him as all he had learnt and put into practice in the last years, was contradicted by Bruce Lee.

This brought him sleepless nights and he began to train under Bruce Lee. And learnt Bruce Lee’s philosophy. The outcome of this was the development of a friendship between Dan Insoanto and Bruce Lee. As Lee said to him “your style comes from yourself” he also trained with other trainers. Judo, Karate and Escrima are a part of Inosanto.

Over the years Dan Inosanto prefers Kali because the principles of Philippine Martial Arts harmonise with the principles of Jeet Kune Do.

Bruce Lee closed his schools when he left for Hong Kong in 1970. Dan Inosanto continued training Jeet Kune Do in a backyard.

1974 Dan Inosanto opened his Academy in order to preserve the philosophy of Jeet Kune Do.

Today, in his Academy, Kali, JKD, Shoot Wrestling, Majapahit, Silat, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, Kickboxing, Thai Boxing, Capoeira and MMA-Mixed Martial Arts are taught. Up until now the Academy has produced countless Instructors all around the Globe.

Dan Inosanto has trained in more than 20 styles from Philippine Martial Arts and is, in countless, also Instructor:

In Muay Thai under Chai Srisute,

Pentiac Silat under the later Hermann Suwanda,

Shoot Wrestling under Yori Nakamura and

Black Belt holder in Brazilian Jin Jitzu under the Machado Brothers.

Dan Inosando also works as a Stuntman, Choreographer for fight scenes and Trainer in many film and television productions.

Jun Fan Kung Fu

Jun Fan Kung Fu is Bruce Lee’s Legacy. He died in 1973, which encompasses fighting Principles of physical training, Lee’s training methods and the philosophy of Jeet Kune Do. (Lee was a student of

Philosophy). He named his own Fighting style after his Chinese first name Lee Jun Fan. The term Jun Fan Kung Fu was used before the term JKD, it (Jun Fan Kung Fu) is today seen as the technical basis for JKD. Lee developed Jun Fan Kung Fu, when he noticed that the system, which he used up until this time, Wing Chun, which he personally learnt from Grandmaster Yip Man showed aspects of discrepancy. But it should serve as the basis for Jun Fan Kung Fu, as it still adds to principles and concepts from other fighting sports.

At just 26 years old, in 1967 Bruce Lee had developed his own style. After Bruce Lee’s years of research, he didn’t plan on inventing a new movement, but to combine the best functioning other styles, so that the techniques could merge together.

Bruce Lee didn’t want to re-invent the wheel, but he had, through the principles and concepts from different Marial Arts and their techniques, after years of research and hard training, developed a new and intelligent fighting style, which is equally suitable for both men and women.

In the beginning phase, Jun Fan Kung Fu was, for the most part, still Wing Chun Kung Fu, but he also trained in Western Boxing and Fencing. Over time, after further studies of other fighting systems and much sparring, he changed his style more and more, so that the today’s system contains only 25% Wing Chun.

1967 saw the development of Jeet Kune Do, which in comparison to Jan Fan Kung Fu, isn’t a fighting style, but a concept and a Philosophy of personal development.

The 26 Elements of Jun Fan Kung Fu

Bruce Lee originally examined and disassembled 26 different styles and took these single parts (the workable techniques) and brought them together as a single teaching block-Jun Fan Kung Fu.

1. Western Boxing

2. May Thai (Thai Boxing)

3. Wing Chun

4. Jiu Jitsu

5. Western Wrestling

6. Tai Chi Chuan (Wu Family Style)

7. Western Foil Fencing

8. Chin Na

9. Northern Tang Lang (N. Mantis)

10. Southern Tang Lang (S. Mantis)

11. Choy Li Fut

12. Baqua Zhang

13. Hsing-I

14. Bak-Ho Pai + Bak-Fu Pai (White Crane + White Tiger)

15. (Eagle Claw)

16. Bak-Mei-Pai (White Eyebrow)

17. North Shaolin

18. South Shaolin

19. Apestyle

20. Drunken Style

21. Bok Pai

22. Law Horn Kuen

23. Phillipine Sikaran

24. Escrima

25. Ng Ga Kuen (Five Family System)

26. Ny Ying Ga (Five Animal System)

From 1964 to 1972 other Elements and other Styles were included. Amongst which were Savate, Pentiak Silat, Panatukan.

As Jun Fan Kung Fu is based on development, and this didn’t stop even after Bruce Lee’s death, today, more techniques and Styles have been integrated amongst them Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Shoot Wrestling.

The Structure of Jun Fan Kung Fu

Jun Fan Marial Arts can be divided into two main Categories: Jun Fan Kickboxing and Jun Fan Trapping (the Trapping / In-Fighting Range counts as an element of wrestling and ground fighting). The aim of this Art is the development of Close-Combat ability.

In unarmed close-combat there are four fighting distances:

1. Kicking Range

2. Hand Range

3. Trapping/In-Fighting Range

4. Grappling and Ground-Fighting

This leads to a fourfold structure of distance. This, to simplify training, is divided into a threefold structure.

The aim of Jun Fan is to train at each of these distances so that the techniques can be effectively and efficiently deployed, whatever the distance.

Jun Fan Kickboxing

The Jun Fan Kickboxing phase began in 1965. The influx of this Art came from many different Structures and sources. Western Boxing, Thai Boxing, French Savate, Filipino Sikaran, North and South Chinese Gung Fu, Wing Chun and others were used. In 1970, Sifu Dan Inosanto added Filipino Boxing (Panantukan) to the teaching program.

This happened primarily for two reasons. First, it allowed Western Boxing more refinement and secondly, it added the possibility to train realistically and combatively without much risk of injury.

Currently many education and training methods are used that were created to be included in the Kickboxing teaching program. In this Sport Art, old methods are updated and customized when necessary. Whilst the basic Principles remain the same.

The entire aim of Jun Fan Kickboxing is, to coordinate kicks and strikes until they blend completely.

Jun Fan Trapping/In-Fighting

In this area one is close enough to seize the opponent’s arms or to render then immovable. The aim of this is to break, dodge or simply to meet every cover the opponent could develop. The Trapping Range is aggressive and mainly offensive. The main part of the Trapping Method is based on Wing Chun Kung Fu. This area of close combat contains the highest efficiency and effectiveness in terminating the situation. The components of In-Fighting such as elbow, knee, head-butt, and body manipulation are all integrated in the Jun Fan Trapping Range.

The Trapping Range can be simply brutal and purely aggressive or highly developed, they can concentrate on finesse or let the opponent’s energy work against them, in order to overcome and dominate.

Grappling and Ground-Fighting

A further integral part of Jan Fun is the Grappling Range. As in every other close Combat Distance, offensive, defensive and countertactics are included. However, it is important to realise that certain elements of Grappling and Ground Fighting are exactly the same. The Grappling Range concentrates on five areas.

1) Locking and Submission

2) Choking and Strangulation

3) Pressure points and Pain

4) Time holds

5) Ground Hitting Tactics,

Each area, is through a diversity of progressive training methods and Grappling instruction, trained and developed.

The principles and Systems come from a number of Wrestling-Systems. Elements from Western Wrestling systems ie Greek-Roman, Freestyle Wrestling, Russian Sambo and English Catch-as-Catch can flow together in just the same way as Japanese Arts. Eg. Judo, Jiu Jitsu or Shoot-Wrestling.

The combination of all these Arts results in a complete picture of Jun Fan Martial Arts. It is important to realise, that in a fight situation, anything can happen. For this reason, the aim of Jun Fan Martial Arts is to become a fully rounded Fighter. It is necessary „to be completely in the situation, to instinctively know which tool, in the situation in which you find yourself, works, and try to maintain the optimum distance.“ (Larry Hartsell, a pupil of Bruce Lee). Either way, whether the Kicking Range, Hand Range, Trapping Range or Grappling Range, the truly rounded fighter functions and dominates wherever it leads.

Dan Inosanto - What is Jeet Kune Do?

J
