Introduction

What is Depression?

Depression is classified as a mental problem. It is a negative feeling of sadness, loss, or anger that can interfere with the daily activities of its sufferers.

It's pretty common too. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) trusted source estimates that 8.1% of American adults aged 20yrs and above suffered from depression over two weeks from 2013 to 2016.

People experience depression in different ways. Depression can disrupt one's daily work. It can lead to wasted time and decreased productivity, both at school and at work.

It can also affect relationships and can result in some chronic health issues.

It's important to realize that sometimes feeling down is a part of life. Boring events come to everyone. But if you regularly feel depressed or hopeless, you may face depression. Depression is considered a serious illness that can get worse without proper treatment.

Those seeking treatment often see improvement in symptoms within weeks.

Depression is a kind of mood disorder that can influence every aspect of daily life.

This disorder affects all segments of the population in every socio-economic group: children, adults, the elderly.

This powerful disease controls the body, mind, behavior, emotional state and can even determine the ability to maintain relationships.

Profound sadness, irritability, rapid weight gain or loss or inability to lose weight, indecisiveness, insomnia or constant fatigue, memory loss, and feelings of worthlessness are some of the effects of depression.

Depression is a mood disorder regarded as one of the most common brain diseases in the world. Over 20 million adults suffer from this disease which can occur when life's hardships seem intolerable, but that is not always the case.

A stressful period does not always cause depression, but it very well can.

Depression is usually due to an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain leading to serious symptoms. These symptoms include thoughts of suicide, decreased appetite or sleep, unexplained crying, or prolonged sadness. Depression can be treated and should not be ignored.

A more dangerous form of depression is called bipolar disorder. This disease is also treatable; however, it does involve more extreme changes within a person's mood and behavior.

The effects of bipolar can last for hours to several months.

Genetics do indeed play a part in the bi-polar disorder. More than two-thirds of depressive patients have at least one close relative with a type of depression. No race, age, or ethnicity is immune from bipolar disorder.

As listed above, the signs to watch for are the same but do include symptoms of mania. Those are: impulsiveness, recklessness, decreased sleep with no signs of fatigue, poor judgment, and increased physical and mental activity.

One moment there is extreme energy, and the next, total despair.

You alone cannot diagnose yourself with depression. Treatment is crucial. Medication will help symptoms subside and make life bearable.

Emotional support and psychotherapy are keys to your treatment. Sharing emotional concerns with trusted friends is a vital factor in your recovery.

Contrary to popular belief, depressive disorders have biochemical origins that, in most cases, readily respond to clinically proven herbal remedies and natural remedies. However, if left untreated, symptoms can endure for weeks, months, or even years.

Symptoms Associated with Depression

Symptoms of depression range from the obvious low mood to the seemingly unrelated telltale sign of memory loss. The severity and types of symptoms vary with individuals and vary over time.

Since depression manifests itself with such a wide array of experiences, it may be difficult to diagnose. For this reason, it often goes untreated.

Recognizing the symptoms, however, is the most important step in the successful treatment of the disease. The symptoms again include:

• Persistent sad or "empty" mood

• Anxiety

• Irritability

• Unexplained crying

• Fatigue or unexplained loss of energy

• Loss of enthusiasm

• Memory loss

• Unexplained weight loss or weight gain

• Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping

• Restlessness

• Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
