Beschreibung

Offers new insights into how Ludwig Wittgenstein understood matters concerning the meaning of life. Widely considered one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century, Ludwig Wittgenstein was deeply interested in the significance of religion and ethics. Although he did not systematically examine religion and the meaning of life in his major published works, Wittgenstein professed that he would at times explore fundamental issues from a religious perspective. Ludwig Wittgenstein: The Meaning of Life is the first compilation of private letters, remarks, and notes regarding Wittgenstein's thoughts and attitudes on ethics, religion, goodness, value, and moral action. With an academic approach, author Joaquín Jareño Alarcón reveals the significance of religion and ethics in Wittgenstein's personal experience, corroborates the permanent tension between Wittgenstein and religion, highlights Wittgenstein's preoccupation with the basic questions addressed by religious discourse, and more. Chronologically organized texts are accompanied by detailed commentary to illustrate how Wittgenstein's interests in religion and ethics were reflected throughout his personal and intellectual evolution. * Articulates Wittgenstein's ethical point of view on religion * Features a wide range of primary sources, such as personal commentaries, annotations, lecture notes, and diary entries * Includes testimony of friends, students, and others with close ties to Wittgenstein * Presents a balanced view of what Wittgenstein wrote and the recollections of others in his circle * Discusses how the principal intention of Tractatus is to demonstrate the relevance of matters concerning religion and the meaning of life Ludwig Wittgenstein: The Meaning of Life is essential reading for postgraduate and senior researchers, as well as advanced philosophy students and non-specialists interested in Wittgenstein's more humanistic writings and his engagement with religion and ethics.

Something that is in direct contrast to the fact that, just after Anscombe's arrival in Cambridge, she would go for walks with Wasfi Hijab and Wittgenstein and argue about questions related to the philosophy of religion during his tutorials.

This book is the result of a lasting interest in Wittgenstein’s thought and personality. But the work could have not been possible if not for the ongoing support of people and institutions that have helped it to grow and be consistent. First, I must mention the Department of Philosophy at the University of Oxford, which accepted me as Academic Visitor. Thanks to its Visitors’ Programme I could make use of enormous bibliographical funds and huge databases, without which I would have been unable to properly accomplish this task. However, I have to make a special mention of Mrs Catriona Hopton, Assistant Administrator of the Department, who has been of invaluable help to me, always ready to give me clues to move easily throughout the whole university. The superb cultural, historic and intellectual environment of Oxford has also helped me to concentrate in my work, constantly stimulating my research interest.

To mention people, there have been many friends and colleagues who have contributed in different ways to this work. I am indebted to Professor Enrique Bonete, from the Universidad de Salamanca, in Spain. His ideas, advice and encouragement have walked along with me since the very beginning of this project. I must also thank Professor José López Martí, from the Universidad de Murcia, in Spain, for the many conversations on Wittgenstein and religion we have had along all these years.

I also want to acknowledge Nazareth and Antonio Javier Jareño, Fergal Martin, Andrej Turk, Imelda Brady, Diana Hernández Pastor and Doctors Miguel Ángel García Olmo and José Jesús García Hourcade for their interesting comments on earlier drafts of this work. I am indebted to Dr Jeff Dean and Dr Liam Cooper, who showed interest in this project from the beginning, making important and fruitful suggestions that have helped the work to improve.

Finally, I want to emphasize my gratitude to Dr P.M.S. Hacker, Emeritus Fellow of St John’s College, Oxford, and one of the last gentlemen of philosophy. Without his support, counselling, criticism and patience with me – mainly in our long conversations during lunchtime – this book would have never become what it is today.
