Overview of NX-OS

Cisco has developed a cutting-edge data center-class operating system, prioritizing maximum scalability and application availability. The foundation of the NX-OS data center-class operating system revolves around modularity, resiliency, and serviceability. Drawing from the proven Cisco Storage Area Network Operating System (SAN-OS) Software, NX-OS ensures continuous availability, setting the standard for mission-critical data center environments. Cisco NX-OS boasts a self-healing and highly modular design, promoting operational excellence and enhancing service levels with exceptional operational flexibility.

Key Advantages of Cisco NX-OS:

Unified data center operating system

Robust feature set with various Cisco innovations

Flexibility and scalability

Modularity

Virtualization

Resiliency

IPv4 and IPv6 IP routing and multicast features

Comprehensive security, availability, serviceability, and management features

Key Features and Benefits of NX-OS:

Virtual Device Contexts (VDC): Segments Cisco Nexus 7000 Series switches into virtual devices, offering benefits like fault isolation, administration plane separation, data traffic separation, and enhanced security.

Virtual Port Channels (vPC): Allows a server or switch to use an EtherChannel across two upstream switches without an STP-blocked port, enabling the utilization of all available uplink bandwidth.

Continuous System Operation: NX-OS facilitates maintenance, upgrades, and software certification without service interruptions through its modular design and features such as In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU) and dynamic process restart capability.

Security: Ensures data confidentiality and integrity with features like IEEE 802.1AE link-layer cryptography and 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Additional security features include access control lists (ACL) and port-security.

Licensing:

Base Services: Default license covering Layer 2 protocols.

Enterprise Services Package: Includes Layer 3 protocols.

Advanced Services Package: Offers Virtual Device Contexts (VDC), Cisco Trustsec (CTS), and Overlay Transport Virtualization (OTV).

Transport Services License: Provides OTV and MPLS.

NX-OS Supported Platforms:

Nexus 7000

Nexus 5000

Nexus 2000

Nexus 1000V

Cisco MDS 9000

Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS)

Nexus 4000

Comparison with Cisco IOS:

Differences in CLI structure and initial log-in process.

NX-OS uses a feature-based license model.

120-day license grace period for testing.

Features can be enabled and disabled dynamically.

Interfaces labeled as Ethernet without speed designations.

Support for Virtual Device Contexts (VDC).

Default presence of two VRF instances.

Secure Shell version 2 (SSHv2) enabled by default.

Kickstart and system image configuration.

Removal of the "write memory" command, replaced by "copy running-config startup-config."

Default Spanning Tree mode is Rapid-PVST+.

Caution: Enabling or removing features in NX-OS requires specific commands, and removing a feature removes related commands from the configuration.
