Frame-Relay Switch configuration

Frame-relay networks require a frame-relay switch to establish virtual circuits between DLCIs. Typically, service providers handle the configuration of the frame-relay switch, but for educational purposes, it's essential to understand it from the customer's perspective. If you wish to set up a frame-relay switch in your lab, you can utilize a Cisco router for this purpose. Here's how to do it:

Enable Frame-Relay Switching Globally:

Interface Configuration for the Switch:

Here, we configure the frame-relay switch's interface, set the clock rate for DCE interfaces, enable frame-relay encapsulation, specify the interface type as frame-relay DCE, and instruct the interface to switch DLCI 102 to interface serial1/2 as DLCI 201.

Configure the Interface for R2:

The configuration is similar, with the frame-relay route command specifying the DLCI mapping in reverse.

Enable Interfaces for R1 and R2:

Verify PVC Status on the Frame-Relay Switch:

To verify the PVC (Permanent Virtual Circuit) status on a Frame-Relay switch, you can use the show frame-relay pvc command. This command will display information about the status and statistics of the PVCs configured on the Frame-Relay switch. Below are the steps to verify the PVC status:

Access the command-line interface (CLI) of the Frame-Relay switch. This typically involves connecting to the switch through a console cable or a remote management method like Telnet or SSH.

Once you have access to the switch's CLI, enter privileged EXEC mode by typing enable and then you may prompted for password.

This command will confirm that the PVCs are active.

Verify PVC Status on R1 and R2:

Now, you can check the PVC status using the show frame-relay pvc command. The basic command format is as follows:

This command displays information about all the configured PVCs on the Frame-Relay switch. The output will provide details for each PVC, including the DLCI number, status, whether it's active, and various statistics such as input and output packets, bytes, errors, and more.

Here's an example of what the output might look like:
