Acknowledgements

Thank you to the nursing staff and pharmacists from the children’s wards and neonatal unit at Royal Preston Hospital for their time and suggestions for case scenarios, and to all the children and families who have contributed their experiences to ensure that this book has a ‘real’ focus (even though their anonymity and confidentiality has been protected throughout as per NMC (2015) The Code). A big special thank you goes to Lisa and Gerard who have contributed a chapter to this book, thus ensuring that the ‘specialist’ neonatal perspective to more complex calculation is evident.

A special thank you goes to Elaine MacDonald and the team of diabetes specialist nurses she works with, for her input and expertise in relation to the management of children and young people with diabetes.

Thank you to the publishers for giving me this opportunity to develop a numeracy text book that is a little bit different from the usual that is with the focus on children and the unique addition of illustrations that I have to thank my sister, Biruta Daina Jefimovs, for. I thank all the people around her who have inspired her also – it is amazing how a visual image can generate so many thoughts and ideas which have added to the quality of the written work in this book.

Thank you for the help and support offered by my family who were both tested from a numeracy perspective (in addition to having to do the usual KS2 and KS3 homework) as well as having a mother/wife who became obsessed with numbers in general and so did not attend to her other duties with as much enthusiasm and passion as expected.

Thank you to many mathematicians, many of whom I did not know existed before starting to research this book – this appreciation of the world of numbers will no doubt continue to grow beyond the publication of this book to infinity and beyond (to quote Lightyear, B).

Thanks finally to all the writers of books and resources that support and inform the good numeracy practice in relation to nursing education that underpins this book.

Arija Parker

DISCLAIMER

Every attempt has been made to ensure that an up-to-date evidence base has been utilised when offering additional information and discussing the care of children, whose case scenarios form the basis for numeracy-related activities, though some artistic licence has been taken to illustrate the numeracy points being made to ensure that the learning in relation to numeracy is reinforced. So please do not rely totally on the brief information offered and read in greater depth than is offered here in relation to anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and evidence-based practice.

In the same way some recognised nursing assessment tools such as PEWS and pain assessment charts, tools have been adapted to suit the needs of the fictitious hospital used in this book which are not tools that are in existence though have been developed from real life examples and references/bibliography included at the end of the book thus acknowledging the primary sources used.

GETTING STARTED: HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

What you need to do and how to use this book

What do you need to give to this book? An open mind, a willingness to challenge some of the assumptions that you have about the worId of mathematics and, as a result, change some of the ways you use mathematical skills in your nursing practice. What you will not need is a typical school mathematics toolkit that includes a ruler, protractor and compass.

What is included in this ‘getting started’ section is a numeracy toolkit that consists of this book and the accompanying website or Online Numeracy Experience (ONE) resource. The guidance that follows will help you navigate your way through the content and use the book and website to their best advantage.
