Bright stars up in the sky

won't you let your secrets show!

As a human, I always ask "why"

oh, my mind just wants to know!

This is part of a five-book series named OURANIA, which is an alternative narration of Greek Mythology. Using the myths of the constellations it attempts to explore known and less known myths from a different point of view. In this first book, named "Myths of Gods and Humans", unfolds the journey of humanity during the different stages of its development, with remarks to its connection with Earth and the Universe.

THE DRUMMER WHO SANG UNDER THE STARS

Once upon a very old time ago, somewhere in the Mediterranean, during a starry summer night a drummer appeared on a sandy pathway. He had come from afar. Where was he from? Well, all the places he had passed from seemed like home to him. At this particular moment the drummer was exactly where he wanted to be: in a place that he could be alone with the stars.

The drummer sat down and sighed with relief, like he was waiting a long time for this moment. He looked up and gazed at the bright spots in the sky. It was a new moon so he could see the constellations clearly. He then started beating a soft rhythm and sang a song that sounded like a prayer:

“Bright stars up in the sky, won’t you let your secrets show!

As a human, I always ask “why”. Oh, my mind just wants to know!”

There was something special about that night, since the stars decided to respond to the curious drummer. He first felt a breeze that sounded like a thousand whispers. The drummer stopped his chant and looked up again. He saw the stars dancing, forming shapes and telling stories. Was it his imagination? The drummer often travelled between reality and fantasy, so both were equal to him. He closed his eyes and imagined that he knew the world’s story right from its beginning. It all started something like this:

THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD

From darkness to light(NIGHT, WIND and THE COSMIC EGG)

The first ruler of the world was Night. She covered the whole of existence under a dark veil. Night had the need of no one because she had grown out of solitude. She was wise and serene as she was the first ever to exist.

Night was so powerful that she had the ability to create gods. In her mist she molded Sleep, who kept everything bound in a deep slumber that was called Chaos. In the murky Chaos, Night wove the Dreams just like a spider spins her web. Alas! Once they were formed the Dreams became restless. They broke their net and started moving around, causing a disturbance in the infinite silence.

As they were swirling around, the Dreams bumped into sleeping Wind. Wind was invisible, yet he had a mind. The Dreams spoke to him: “Do you hear us?” and Wind replied with a slight puff, like a whisper. Instantly, the Dreams took shape in his fantasy and made him see images he had never seen before.

Wind woke up after that amazing journey and realized that he was breathing. His breath was soft like a summer breeze and it gradually changed into a powerful gale. It kept growing stronger and stronger until Wind blew with such force that he swept away Night’s veil. He swirled around her several times until the goddess brought forth… a silver egg.

Night cradled the silver egg until a small crack began to form on its surface. Through the opening a deity with golden feathers emerged, followed by a beam of light. That bright deity was a child of the Night who carried all her wisdom; a descendant of the Wind who could travel faster than thought. Its name was Phanis which means “the one who reveals” and it had the power to create life.

Phanis was not a boy, nor a girl, but both of them together and was also known as “the Primeval”, since Phanis was the first ever to be born. Many names are given to this deity yet no one knows its real identity. This is a well hidden secret, as is the dawn of the Cosmos.

Phanis had the whim of a goat, the will of a lion, the power of an ox and the wisdom of a snake. Phanis was everywhere and Phanis was nowhere. Phanis moved and at the same time Phanis remained still. That mysterious deity managed to dissolve Night’s mist by simply rotating its wings, and by its mere presence it managed to set the whole Universe in motion. Phanis spread its golden wings and shed dazzling light into the crack of the cosmic egg from where it had emerged. The intensity of the glow made the egg open up in two and out came everything that was once hidden in darkness.

When Sky saw Earth(THETIS and THE UNIVERSE)

The cosmic egg opened up in an explosion of light that forced everything to gush out. In the beginning there was just some undefined matter scattering in all directions. That dispersion created a huge cloud of dust and from inside of it appeared Thetis, the goddess that arranged the Universe.

Thetis began her task by making a pathway which had a beginning and an end, because nothing can exist without a start and a finish. That pathway allowed the world to start rolling. As soon as matter got on track the dust started to clear up. This allowed the elements of nature to be revealed. Thetis held a drum and started to beat a constant rhythm in order to lead each element to its place. She made Fire stand up high and below she placed Air. Underneath Water and Solid Matter settled, since they were the heaviest of all.
