Preface

The present book constitutes Volume 9 in the book series “Progress in Adhesion and Adhesives”. This book series was conceived in 2014 and the premier volume made its debut in 2015. Apropos, we did not label the premier volume as Volume 1 as at that time we did not have the sixth sense to tell how this series was going to evolve. It should be recorded for posterity that Volumes 1-6 were based on review articles first published in the journal “Reviews of Adhesion and Adhesives” (RAA). As of July 2022, I have not been associated with RAA. As a result, Volumes 7, 8 and 9 contain invited chapters specifically commissioned for these volumes.

If comments from readers and colleagues are a barometer for the success of the series, then these 8 Volumes have served their intended purpose, i.e. to provide state-of-the-knowledge reviews on many and varied topics within the broad purview of adhesion and adhesives. These 8 volumes have been enthusiastically received by the community of adhesionists and this has fully vindicated the publication of this book series. So, we have decided to keep this book series going and bring out new volumes on a regular (yearly) basis.

The current book (Volume 9) contains 14 chapters that have not been previously published. The topics covered include: Use of hydrophobic and icephobic coatings for aircraft icing mitigation; fundamental concepts and application of hydrophobic coatings; plasma treatment of polymers to enhance their adhesion; atmospheric pressure plasma treatment of artificial leather; sustainable plasma technology as surface treatment on footwear materials; bromination--the only selective plasma process; bonding to low surface energy materials and ways to improve bond strength; effects of a defect and/or joint geometry on stress distribution in tubular joints under tensile loads; failure cases in adhesive joints and coatings; initiating systems for curing anaerobic adhesives; use of fungal mycelia as adhesive in composites; mechanically responsive hydrogels as adhesives for clinical applications; polyurea adhesives and coatings; and adhesion of electrode coatings in lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors.

The chapters in this book are written by world-renowned researchers actively involved in the arena of adhesion and adhesives. This book is profusely illustrated and copiously referenced. This book, like its predecessors, should be of appeal and interest to adhesionists, adhesive technologists, polymer scientists, materials scientists, and those involved/interested in adhesive bonding, plasma treatment of polymers including artificial leather, anaerobic adhesives, hydrogels as adhesives, and adhesion in lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors.

Now it is my pleasant task to thank all those who were instrumental in materializing this book. Naturally first and foremost, my thanks go to the authors for their keen interest, sustained enthusiasm, unwavering cooperation, and sharing their valuable research experience in the form of written accounts (which essentially provided the requisite material for this book, without which this book could not have been possible). Also, Martin Scrivener (Publisher) should be thanked for conceiving the idea of publishing this book series and for his steadfast interest and whole-hearted support.
