Chapter One

Vacation in Nebraska

The Sassy girl cousins are at it again. This time they wanted to do something a little different on their vacation. They like a good adventure. There is a Horse Show in Nebraska, so they decided to go since they love horses.

It was a bumpy ride, but they had had worse. When they made it to Nebraska, they had put their horses on the trailer, and the girls decided to get in the truck for a while, also. When they saw something that looked like ruts from a Conestoga wagons, they became intrigued. The girls were shooting out bright smiles. It wasn’t long before they saw someone in a wagon, and they wanted to run to talk to them. The girls decided to not run on a rugged trail, so they stopped and led their horses out of the trailer. They couldn’t wait to see what that wagon was all about.

“Hi, I never thought we would see a covered wagon in this lifetime. Do you live around here?”

“Yes, we get our wagon out on weekends. Our grandchildren love it, and they are so happy when they are in this wagon. They keep looking for a bear, but we never see them anymore.” They thought that was a good thing. No one wants to see a bear up close.

“Is it okay if we ride beside you for a while?”

“Sure, you can eat lunch with us. We always have a picnic along the trail. We have plenty of food if you would like to join us.” The ladies knew this was going to be a fantastic trip.

“That sounds good. Do you mind if our driver of the trailer eats with us, also?” They wanted to make sure to take care of him.

“That would be great.” Alaska noticed the woman in the wagon had on a long gingham dress. “Did you make your dress? I have never seen one in a store. You did a good job of making your dress.”

The lady smiled and said she did indeed make the dress. “It makes us feel like we are really going somewhere. I also made my granddaughters a bonnet.”

“Wow! That is great,” Jas says. “You are a good grandmother.”

They finished their lunch and told the wagon people they needed to be getting on their way. “Thank you so much for the food. I sure don’t see a McDonald’s around here, so the food you had was delicious.”

“Hope you ladies have a great time here.”

“We love it here away from the cars and other noises of new cars that took the place of a horse.” The girls said their goodbyes with a large smile.

After they left the wagon people, they saw a real wagon train with covered wagons. They rode over to see what was going on due to them being stopped and in a circle. They thought it might be fun to talk to them. Some of the women ran up to their horse with sweet smiles.

“You might not want to be around here too long. We saw a bunch of Indians and they stared at us, and then one of them rode up to us and threw his spear in the ground. We thought that meant they were going to come back and have a battle. We sure didn’t want a battle.”

“Ma’am, I don’t think Indians do that anymore. This is a modern world now.” Houston said with authority. They don’t have battles anymore. Most of the Indians are on Reservations.

“Really? We didn’t know that. We are going on the Oregon Trail to find land so we can make a better life.” This confused the ladies. She didn’t know much about what was happening in the world.

“Please stay with us.” The Pioneer woman, who wanted them to stay, said.

“I can see the Indians, and there are not too many. We may be able to talk to them. They don’t seem to be mean. Some of them are even smiling.” They didn’t like they were smiling. That could be good or bad.

“Are you crazy?” The woman couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “You shouldn’t get too close to the Indians. They may take you away and never to be seen again.

“I hear that Indians are not on the warpath anymore,” Jas smiled at the lady.

“Yep, that’s what I heard, too. Please stay for a while. I see that you girls all have a gun with you. Maybe if they see more people here, they may go away. You can spend the night with us if you want to.”

“I see that you all have a gun with you.”

“I guess we could stay for one night, but after that, we have somewhere we need to be. If we didn’t have other plans, we would stay longer.”

“Don’t worry too much about the Indians. They are not what you think. Think they are becoming like us.”

“Oh, you are such sweet people. Come over to the wagons and we will get acquainted,” The woman said with a huge smile that seemed to cover her whole face. She appeared to be eager for them to stay.

The girls dismounted and strolled slowly toward the wagon train. The others in the wagon train stared at the ones they were seeing. They had on funny clothes. Some of the men were thinking about the women who had on britches. They didn’t really think much of it.

One of the men went over to the girls, “Mable, where did you find these ladies?” The man with no front teeth uttered. He didn’t like what he was seeing.

“They will be staying with us tonight.” The woman named Mable said with a huge smile. She wanted to ask about what kind of clothes they had on. She had never seen anything like it before, but she kind of liked it. She may try it herself.

“Only men wear britches around here. You ladies are not fluzzies are you?”

“No, Ma’am, we are not fluzzies. We wear them when we ride horses because they are more comfortable.”

Chapter Two

Old FarmHouse

The ladies went through a patch of rain. They looked and looked and didn’t find any shelter, but luck was with them. The rain finally stopped. They searched for a bit until they found an old farmhouse. It looked like happy people might live here, and the girls like happy people.

A man came out and told the ladies to come into the house. They realized something was wrong. The mom and five daughters all had on Pioneer clothes. It’s no wonder they stared at them, their dad looked sort of mean, like he didn’t know what to do next. After some thinking, he finally smiled.

The ladies remembered that the wagon train women had on the same clothes. The daughters were staring at their visitors because their clothes were so different. The girls guessed that the girls didn’t wear blue jeans in this century.

The traveling girls didn’t know what to do next. No one said anything, so the girls sat on their horses and smiled at the family. A lady came out and told them that they would love their company. “As you can see, we don’t have any more houses close by.”

“You can stay the night here if you want to,” the sweet lady with such a wide smile said. “We would love your company.”

“We would, but we already have plans for tonight. How about tomorrow? We don’t have any plans for tomorrow. You are so nice to ask.” They rode away back to the wagon where Mable and some others were.
