I didn't know it was going to be like this. He promised me that I would see them again. He promised I would see my family. I never knew I would end up with these horrible visions; visions of my past and visions of things, places, and people I have never seen before. He lied to me, He lied to me. I can’t believe I fell for his trickery. I am only twelve years old, and it feels like my life is ruined.
It all started when my family mysteriously disappeared. I am not for sure where they went, or if they are even alive. All that I know is I miss them desperately. That stupid soothsayer told me he could show me how to see my family again. He said if I went to the labyrinth near the deep forest, I would be able to see them. He didn't tell me how, just that I would. Now here I am, having visions, and I have no idea where my family is. The middle of the labyrinth was supposed to lead me to them, but here I am hurting and still alone, all alone. I was sent to look for my family, but all I saw was a shrine, one with a very large blue gem on it. The gem messed with my head, it made me feel confused and angry. I didn't take it, because I knew something was wrong. Now, here I am, seeing visions and still alone... or so I thought.
All of the sudden, I felt a very sharp pain, one that felt like my head was being stabbed with a knife. Then they were back, the visions. Visions of a baby crying, hopelessly, in need of help. It made me feel bad. I wanted to help him, but it was no use. It was all a vision. All of the sudden, it felt as if something was going to jump out of my chest. That was when I knew. I knew I was different now. I had been cursed with a wraith. I slowly began to understand what was wrong with me. It was that blue light, the one coming from that gem. I knew it was bad, I knew something was wrong. Wraiths are greedy like that, they take over and try to control you, control your thoughts and become you. But for some reason, this time, the wraith couldn't completely control me. He seemed to be jumping in and out of my body.
Then I realized that he was trying to tell me something. He was trying, somehow, to communicate with me. Why? Why would he be trying to talk to me? What could a wraith want with me, an average twelve-year-old boy from Morodor? What was he trying to say? Then I began to figure it out; I soon realized he needed me to find his crown. He was leading me to an abandoned castle. I feel like I’ve seen it before but I don’t know where. I could feel the crown’s power compelling me to go towards it. The power was so strong, I couldn’t resist it.
When entering the castle, there was a horrible bloody stench, one that made my stomach churn. As I advanced, I heard a roar that was so loud that it shook the earth beneath me. It felt like an earthquake. Then, out of nowhere, the wraith made me pick a sword up off the ground. I don’t know why, but it scared me. My body began to shake. Then a dragon burst through the wall and started attacking me. The wraith was smart, obviously a great warrior in his time, dodging swiftly and slashing the dragon with great skill. Finally, we hit the dragon with one final deathly blow. The dragon fell with a large thud, shaking the entire cave. All of the sudden, a bright shining crown appeared on a pedestal; I stared in amazement. The wraith unknowingly forced me to put it on. With a flash of time, the visions came flooding back, visions of everything, pouring into my memory. There was that baby again. This time there was a man too. Then my father was putting a crown on the baby, it was too big for the baby. Wait! The baby was me! Then I realized what the wraith was trying to tell me; he was telling me that I was the future king of Morodor. When the vision ended, I saw a shape form in front of me. It was my father. My father was the wraith. I was too stunned to speak, so all I did was walk up and hug him.
I guess that soothsayer didn't lie completely.
The End
This summer was one I will never forget. Every summer, it’s the same thing. I go and visit my Nona. That’s what I call my Grandma. Bald Head Island is the most beautiful place to visit, and I get to spend the whole summer there! We take walks on the beach, go to our favorite restaurant, and swim in the ocean. My favorite thing to do is collect seashells. This summer, I learned something that will stay with me forever.
The second week at my Nona’s beach house, she told me to come to the kitchen table. I sat down, and she said she needed to tell me a story. Nona told me that when she met my grandfather, she knew he would be the man she married. They only dated for 6 months before Papa asked her to marry him. Shortly after he asked, they were married, and my Papa was called to the war.
“Rayleigh, when your papa was young, boys didn’t have a choice about being in the military. If they got called to go into the war, then they went whether they liked it or not.”
The war lasted for quite some time, but they wrote letters almost every day while Papa was gone. They had my dad two years after Papa returned from the war. When my dad was 3 months old, my Papa was called back to the war and would never return.
When Nona found out about my Papa being killed, she was devastated. She couldn’t imagine never seeing the love of her life again. She couldn’t imagine not seeing him make his funny faces to make her laugh. She couldn’t imagine life without him.
Nona said that it all started one night when she was putting my dad to bed. She noticed that he was smiling the biggest smile she’d ever seen. She thought maybe one of the stuffed animals he had in the corner had caught my dad’s eye. But this smile was different. She turned around and saw nothing. She thought nothing more of it. This continued for three nights straight. Finally, Nona asked my dad, “William, why have you smiled every time I’ve tucked you in for the past three nights?”
Nona wasn’t prepared for the answer she got from her 3 year old boy. “When you tuck me in at night, he always tries to make me laugh. That man that is in all the pictures downstairs, he makes funny faces.”
Nona replied, “William, come down stairs with me.” Nona said she took my dad in her arms and pointed to his dad’s picture on the mantle. Nona asked, “Is this him? Is this the man making funny faces at you?”
