In the past, many sādhanas were needed to purify the human mind, body and heart: intense study of the Vedas, extreme austerities, and long periods of meditative absorption. Fortunately for us today, it’s different: the easiest and quickest way to purify ourselves is to chant the Name of God given by the satguru. Simply chanting the Divine Name is enough to end all our suffering.

On 8 April, 2020, an extraordinary event took place. On this day, Paramahamsa Vishwananda received the mantra, śrī viṭṭhala giridhāri parabrahmaṇe namaḥ, as it was revealed by Bhagavān Himself. This mantra has now become the mūla-mantra, the main mantra, of the Hari Bhakta Sampradāya.

For everyone (whether a devotee or follower or simply curious about the bhakti path) who wants to deepen their spiritual experience, this booklet will help provide a more profound understanding about the nature of this Divine Name in the form of this extraordinary mantra.

And now, since we have been graced to receive this Name of Śrī Hari, then the only thing that is needed is our willingness to make it part of our lives, and to chant it throughout our day—no matter what we’re doing—with love.

ABOUT PARAMAHAMSA VISHWANANDA

Paramahamsa Vishwananda carries the grace of two lineages which emphasise bhakti: loving devotion to God.

He is an ācārya of the Vaiṣṇava tradition, which promotes bhakti through ritual and service. He is also a kriyā master and direct disciple of Mahāvatāra Bābājī in the kriyā-yoga lineage. With the blessing of His guru, He introduced Atma Kriya Yoga which promotes bhakti through meditation.

Paramahamsa Vishwananda expertly weaves these two traditions together, one external and one internal, with the bhakti teachings of scriptures and the inspiration of bhakti saints to show everyone how to cultivate a uniquely personal, loving relationship with the Divine.

Since Paramahamsa Vishwananda is a satguru (one who can bring devotees to the level of God-realisation), the glory of God can be revealed through Him. Still, remaining humble and humorous, He makes the unfathomable, unknowable Lord not only real, but practical, tangible and personal. He brings the most profound and subtle truths down to earth, so that the same path that, traditionally, was pursued only by the few, is now accessible to all.

Dedicating His life to uplifting humanity, Paramahamsa Vishwananda’s teachings can be found in His books, videos, spiritual practices, livestream satsaṅgs (spiritual Q&A), online Darshan blessings, and His worldwide mission and organisation known as Bhakti Marga (the path of devotion).

INTRODUCTION

Overview of this Book

sarveṣām apy aghavatām idam eva suniṣkṛtam | nāma-vyāharaṇāṁ viṣṇor yatas tad-viṣayā matiḥ ||

The best means of purification for all, even those full of vice, is the chanting of Hari-nāma. One’s consciousness thus flows towards Hari, and His attention is likewise attracted by the chanter.

– Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, 6.2.10

The Name of God and God are identical. Chanting the Name alone is enough to end all our suffering. If we have been graced to receive the Name of Śrī Hari (Hari-nāma), then the only thing that is needed is our willingness. Chanting the Name of God given by the satguru is the easiest and quickest way to attain the vision of God. In the past, many sādhanas were needed to purify our hearts: intense study of the Vedas, extreme austerities, or long periods of meditative absorption. In the times we live in, only the Name of Hari bestowed by a satguru is the means of salvation.

On 8 April, 2020, an extraordinary event took place. On this day, Paramahamsa Vishwananda received the mantra, śrī viṭṭhala giridhāri parabrahmaṇe namaḥ, through a vision of Bhagavān. This mantra is the mūla-mantra, the main mantra of the Hari Bhakta Sampradāya, and was revealed by Bhagavān Himself.

This booklet intends to offer valuable information about the nature of the Name of Hari in the form of śrī viṭṭhala giridhāri parabrahmaṇe namaḥ to all those who wish to deepen their practice of this sacred mantra as well as those simply curious about the path of bhakti, as presented by Paramahamsa Vishwananda.

What is a Mantra?

mananāt trāyatē iti mantraḥ |

A mantra is a phrase or sound that, through repetition, protects and releases one from the roots of suffering.

– Nirukta

Repeating a mantra can help a person to attain all four goals of life: dharma (righteous living), kāma (fulfilling one’s desires), artha (acquiring wealth) and mokṣa (liberation from cycle of birth and death). However, the most fortunate ones only aspire for the love of God, which transcends these goals altogether. Another meaning of the word mantra is that which frees (trai) the mind (man).

Traditionally, a Vedic mantra possesses six characteristics: a divine seer, ṛṣi, who perceives the mantra, a metre called chandas, a deity to whom it refers, a bīja or seed, a specific śakti (the energy in the form of the mantra
