Inspired by the speech of one of the most infamous racists in American history, Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America elevates Jefferson Davis' 1860 litany to the US Senate into an in-depth exploration of the racist ideology deeply rooted in American societyーtracing its historical roots to Portugal 500 years ago. In condensing events, spanning centuries into a 592-page book, Ibram X. Kendi, one of America's leading racial equality champions and a seasoned historian, begins by making the distinction between the two most crucial concepts in the book: racist and antiracist ideas. He states that a racist notion is any thought that insinuates the superiority of a racial group over another while an antiracist idea asserts the equality of all races. This frictional dichotomy between racial hierarchy and racial justice has shaken the fissures in the plains of human relations so violently that the gaping chasm seems unbridgeable. But for people like Kendi, who recognize the tremendous work to be done, naming racism and its insidious structures is only half the battle.
