Blogging is my passion. Marketing and helping others are another two passions of mine. This book combines all of that and more into a one-stop guide to blogging success. What makes this book different than others, you may ask?

The blogging industry is hot, and it has been for over 15 years. Everyone and their grandma have a blog, and even companies are jumping on board. Think of what you do with the internet. If you did, you are right there with the majority of people. Blogs represent the best, most reliable information out there, and people trust blogs.

Let’s look at some statistics. Seriously, if these stats don’t solidify your desire to blog, then I don’t know what will!

Right now, the B2B (business to business) marketing reigns supreme, and it just keeps climbing! The room for you in this market is unreal, so you might as well capitalize on it! As a business who uses SEO rich content, you are likely to receive more leads with a blog than without it. We will discuss SEO later, but basically by optimizing your content to rank supreme on Google, you are organically drawing people to your content, and that makes them more likely to become a customer.

What if I don’t have a business though? Well, my friend, a blog is a business. When you begin yours, you will see the value that you are giving people: enriching their lives by sharing your knowledge with them. From that point on, you will understand the importance of capitalizing on the information and making a profit.

The ROI (return on investment) of a company blog is better and more long-term than any other traditional marketing methods. Think about it. A company that does not have a blog will not see their ROI efforts as successful as a company that is taking advantage of the blogging boom. One important thing to remember here is this: you can still blog even if you are not paying the bills for the blog. People, copywriters, get paid every day to write blogs for companies that earn both parties serious money.

Vlogs are also starting to emerge more and more in recent years. The successful ones are the ones that also integrate a traditional blogging platform or option. The vlog and blog work together to bring stellar content and information to the customer, thus enriching their lives. Studies are showing that the correlation between traditional blogs and video blogs (vlogs) balance each other well.

B2B marketing is a fantastic way to make money blogging. As mentioned before, you do not need to have your own blog, but rather you could simply choose to blog for a company. By reaching out to other companies, you can show samples of your work, let them know what you can do to help their inbound marketing efforts, and hopefully, work for them on a freelance basis.

When you blog daily, you get 5x more traffic than if you blog less than that

The most effective content are how-to articles, listicles, case studies, and white papers and lead to the writer being more credible.

Written content is more important than any other type according to 58% of marketers

The highest rated material are white papers and case studies. Think the platinum standard of writing.

There are 7 million people blogging on conventional websites, and 12 million people microblogging, blogging via social networks.

In order to be successful, you need to be in the top 5-10% of your niche.

81% of American consumers say that blogs are where they go to get their information.

Having 21-54 blog posts will increase your webpage traffic by up to 30%

Pillar content increases your organic traffic by 38%. One pillar post can create as much as 6 other posts. These are the posts you should consider turning into other products.

Branded content is more effective than magazine ads according to 72% of marketers.

Blogs are the 5th most trusted source of information on the internet.

Social shares from Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter make a blog look more credible.

Adding a blog to an existing site has the potential to increase traffic upwards of 400%.

There are about 5 million blogs created every day.

77% of internet users read blogs consistently.

The average blog post is between 1000 and 1500 words, and the post takes around 3 and a half hours to write.

Reads that are around the 7 minute mark receive the most attention

55% of marketing professionals consider the blog content creation as the top inbound marketing strategy out there.

57% of marketers are planning on increasing their company’s blogs.

70% of customers prefer to receive promotions through articles than through ads.

Changes in the Industry

The blogging industry has changed, morphed, and emerged what it is today over the last 30 years. It sounds crazy that blogs have been around longer than the internet has been mainstream, but it is true. These blogs were just in different forms.

During the mid to late 80’s, aggregations was used. The idea was to summarize the content that was sort of thrown together and make it more organized and available to specific communities. Organization was the goal, and blogs are still doing this today.

The mid-90’s brought online journals. It was a more inner-focused form of informational avenue. The traditional message boards were slowly phased out, and comment sections emerged in their place. The ideal was to link people together through common ideas and content.

The 2000’s brought the blog into the field of journalism. By blowing in and declaring itself, the bloggers entered the game. They were analyzing and interpreting the news. Bloggers offered their own opinions, and these opinions mattered greatly. Looking back, this is the beginning of the immense credibility that bloggers would achieve down the road.

In the mid-late 2000’s, blogs were unifying different stages of life: mommy blogs, politics, sports, entertainment gossip blogs, and more became the popular types. This is when it became clear that making money was the way to go when you had a blog.

Microblogging is becoming a huge trend quickly. Things like Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr allow audiences to become part of the contributing force behind the blogs. They are no longer fans, but rather, they are part of the process. Traditional blogging still has its place, but because of the ever, rapid changing industry, it is getting to be a challenge to get in. Not impossible though!

Making Money

Making money blogging is a legitimate option. No longer do you need to solely rely on affiliate marketing to make money. The marketing trends are changing, and along with them, the options to make money. Later in the book, we will discuss the options in detail, but for now, let’s hit the highlights.

Ways to make money with blogging include:

B2B blogging-writing for companies that need blogs to reach their clientele.

Offering coaching services to clients and customers who are motivated by the information that you are offering.

Become a freelance blogger and make yourself in-demand by creating and curating quality materials again and again.

Create and sell online courses. By doing this, you are able to provide yourself with passive income that happens while you sleep.

Writing e-books. Remember when we talked about pillar posts above? In a later chapter, we will discuss how to take those pillar posts and turn them into e-books.

Launch a virtual summit. Best idea ever! A virtual summit is when different experts come together and agree to get interviewed. For a limited time, these interviews are free to watch, but you can offer the exclusive pass that gives unlimited access to viewers for a fee.

Legalities of Blogging

As with everything, there are legalities that come with blogging. Depending where you live, there are laws that will protect you from lawsuits.

Three Legal Pages you need to be in compliance of the law when blogging are: terms and conditions page, disclaimers and disclosures page for blogs, and privacy policy pages. For right now, since this will be delved into deeper later in the book, know that before you go live with your blog, you need to have these. They are not optional, and you want to have them to protect yourself.

Legal pages are needed for a variety of reasons:

Prevent lawsuits.

Comply with the law.

Protect your intellectual property rights.

Deny personal liability.

Discuss the website rules.

Give mandatory disclosures.

What other laws do you need to know about? There are a few, so let’s get started discussing them.

Federal Income Tax

Just like with other income, if you make money from blogging, you need to report the income and pay taxes. If you don’t, then you are breaking the law and there are consequences when that happens.

Law in Relation to Blog Comments

You own the blog, so you assume that you own the comments that pop up. The reality is, however, that you do not own the comments because they fall under a category called “user-generated content.” A loophole does exist for this though. Through a clause in your terms and services agreement, you can bypass the user-generated content part of the law. Making it mandatory for people to agree to the terms of services before they can post comments means that they either allow you to have control, or they don’t post. It’s as simple as that.
