EXCELLING YOUR BIM EFFORTS

What distinguishes a great BIM Manager from a good or merely proficient one? Where are BIM and the management of building modeling technologies headed? The previous five eParts explore BIM's best practice, the social component of Change Management, technical knowledge as well as strategic and day-to-day support; this final ePart, in contrast, shifts the focus to the exceptional and delivers a compelling account of key factors that marks out a BIM Manager and leads him or her to excel at their job. By way of conclusion to the series, this ePart also highlights the path BIM Management is taking from design coordination and model-centric activities toward Project Management and Data Engineering.

BIM Management is a kit of moveable parts in which every element is in constant flux. As highlighted on several occasions across this series, the BIM Manager's role is often misunderstood, even among those within their own organizations, making it difficult for those who do it well to get the recognition they fully deserve. Yet, out there is a growing group of truly committed individuals who strive for excellence and who push where BIM is headed. What distinguishes these experts from others is their curiosity. They are not simply immersed in their daily tasks, but they keep questioning what it is they do as part of the larger developments that affect design, construction, and management of projects overall. They test out ideas, debate them veraciously, and they form networks to disseminate their knowledge. They are the opinion leaders, actively debating BIM and its context on numerous public forums, social networks, conferences, local user-group sessions, and more. These BIM Managers and technology leaders are at the vanguard of innovation that often makes a distinctive contribution to the competitiveness of the organization they work for. As such, they are highly regarded and well paid figureheads who represent their firm's interest on a global scale. As a byproduct they are marketing their firm's BIM capabilities and establishing a sense of excellence that may be the decisive factor for clients to choose one consultant/contractor over another.

The approach taken throughout this publication—namely the inclusion of expert feedback from global leaders in BIM and its management—is taken a step further in this final ePart. In order to respond to the key questions put forward above, four highly regarded individuals offer their insights on every major topic presented
