The Courtesan - Part Five

Chapter Twenty-five

––––––––

Tisane slept most of the first week, while we waited for Willow to return. I had busied myself with the information Elaine had gathered, including the maps she had provided. Information on file within the computer included the topography of the region, and with little difficulty I pinpointed where this newly discovered empire was, and mapped out several ways to reach it without being seen.

The sketches provided showed little organization to the streets of this new empire, areas of commerce were scattered about without real thought, but the palace of this empire was extremely well fortified.

“Tisane has asked for you,” Tiral said, entering my quarters.

“How is she?”

“She grows stronger. Her computer terminal had been disabled, just in case, so she knows very little beyond what she has seen. She realizes she cannot leave her quarters. She dances as clumsily as ever when she thinks she’s alone, and cries while she dances. I feel heartbroken when I watch. Elaine fixes her meals, and has helped her with the shower and toilet. She was given new clothing to wear, too. No more slave rags.”

“I will give Willow another week, but no more. If she is not back by then I’ll ask you to find her.”

“Understood. I’ve been trying to teach Tisane basic sign language, something I found within the files.”

“Sign language?”

“It was a way for those who could not hear, or could not speak, to talk to others using their hands. I would suggest you take the time to learn. I think it an excellent and covert method of communication. I also asked her to write down all she knows, what she had heard, and why she felt it her duty to warn us. I impressed upon her we needed a detailed account.”

Tiral then handed me several sheets of paper. At first glance it seemed to ramble, so I would need time to properly study it.

“I will read this later,” I said. “I’ve been thinking about our other brothers and sisters. If they feel threatened they would likely retreat to the temple, and from the temple to here. Godi-Patroon might think it best to lead them here, and that would compromise our position. Others who actually know of this place, older sisters all, they might already be on the mountain near the entrance.”

“Elaine has been watching the security screens for any signs of activity outside, and has seen none. Not as of yet.”

“If what Tisane discovered is true, then our moment is upon us. Here and now we decide the fate of all humanity.”

“You do not have to decide things alone.”

“I alone will make this decision based upon everything I understand about the old world, and the new world we inhabit. I alone must do this, but I thank you for your concern.”

“As you wish.”

I was left to the silence, and three sheets of paper, waiting for Willow.

Tisane, in collecting the palace laundry, had heard only bits and pieces of conversations, but it was enough for her to form a bigger picture of what was transpiring. Not allowed to linger for any real length of time, she had concluded that all the Noble Lords had labeled the followers of Loran a danger to the empire. Plans were being made to attack the temple, and there was talk of others joining the ranks of the emperor’s army, others from another empire. Soon they would launch their plans, if they had not already.

I did not sleep well that night.

Willow did return two days later, and after she had a meal and rested, she called us all together to report her findings.

“Many of the brothers have died to protect the sisters as they escaped the palace, and those sisters have been warning all they could from around the empire. There is a siege force being gathered by the emperor, and I have no doubt their goal is the temple. A great encampment outside the main walls of the city is filled with warriors from the other empire. I estimate a thousand men, at the very least. Things are moving quickly.”

“Then Tisane,” Elaine said, “what little she saw and heard, is correct.”

“The emperor himself killed Mistress Serrin as I watched from a hidden alcove that overlooks the throne room,” Willow said. “He . . . giggled, as he sliced her throat.”

“That I am sorry to hear,” Mistress Cali said. “Patroon knows of this?”

“He does,” she replied. “He asked me if he should lead the others here, or lead them out into the wilderness to the south of the temple. Make their way along the coastline to the other side of this mountain range, and then across that wilderness to our back door, as he put it. I told him this complex must be protected at all costs.”

“Then he will lead the others on that long journey,” Mistress Cali said, “if he has survived the siege.”

“It will be up to us to gather our wayward brothers and sisters,” I said. “We must first deal with the problems at h [...]
