Chapter Twenty

––––––––

Nalla lay dead, and Mistress Cali stood there, waiting. It took a moment to realize she was waiting on me. Each sister then turned from Nalla’s corpse to wait for my next move.

“I ordered her killed,” I said, shocked.

“Your older self said she would betray us,” Mistress Cali returned, only then cleaning and sheathing her sword. “And now you know that you are the mother of us all. It is up to you to decide on what happens to us, and the Farvahl culture. You now lead the Loran Temple.”

I wasn’t sure, if the truth be told, what I should do next. Six sisters were gone, and this world waited for me to decide. The last thing I felt like was the Gydia, or leader of the Loran Temple.

Without really thinking about my actions, I retrieved and opened the container.

Like a puff of black smoke into the air, I saw a portion of the cloud enter each sister, enter Mistress Cali, and without hesitation I inhaled my portion.

“I feel nothing,” Willow said.

“Nor do I,” Tiral said. “I am more interested in why Nalla would betray us, and how that might have been possible. She, more than any of us here, worked hard to become a courtesan.”

“True,” I said, “Nalla is dead, and we need to discover the reason for her death.”

The window lit up again, and again I spoke.

“By me saying ‘Nalla is dead,’ the second part of this message has now been activated. Most of the systems here are voice activated, and I can allow your voices to activate systems and tools you will need to understand this city, and all the wonders I have left for you. But first, a story of my own, and then I suggest you enjoy a meal and get some needed rest.

“You need not understand this, not yet, but the first time I came here, Nalla did not die. She received my gift, like all of you, and she grew in knowledge, strength, and speed. We spent many days here, growing in wisdom and power. We began to explore the city, and found the true wealth of the followers of Loran. I will let you do that too, rather than bore you with unnecessary details. We discussed many a thing, but foremost was our discussion on the empire, and whether we should let it survive. The conclusions she drew differed from all of ours, and so she began her walk down a dark path.

“We became besieged on two fronts. From without, and from within. By changing my future, and now your future, I have given the Loran Temple the only chance it will ever get. You now have to decide your future, and the future of all on this world. Decide each step carefully, my sisters, for we cannot ever repeat the mistakes of the past.

“Evil men and women are everywhere within the history of humanity, and even one man or woman can cause great damage. However smart one person can be, humanity as a whole is still a child. That is our greatest challenge. Once and for all of time, humanity as a whole must grow up to become adults. Only humanity as a whole can keep our world safe. That is all you need to know . . . for now.”

The view screen darkened, and I had to leave the room. I couldn’t stay, knowing this was a point in time the world would never forget. The others joined me, and like me, sat down, stunned into silence.

We were not hungry, nor were we tired. Tiral said something about her chest hurting for a few moments, yet the pain went away.

It had to have been half the night gone before Mistress Cali said, “We must eat, and we must sleep. Here is as good as place as any.”

We unrolled our bedding, but I still felt uneasy and needed to think, so did not cook a meal as the others did.

“You must eat something,” Tiral said, offering me a portion of her meal.

I ate it, but if it had flavor, I didn’t notice. I was deep in thought.

Nalla had betrayed us, or would have betrayed us, both being true, and she had paid for that betrayal with her life. I was here, but I was also there, and between us was a hundred thousand years. How could that have been my second time there, when I had yet to go there for a first time?

Nalla had been given my gift the first time, but had died the second time, changing our future.

I finally fell asleep, but didn’t sleep well. I kept waking, my mind and dreams wandering in all directions at once, but all those dreams involved . . . Time. What it was, and how it worked.

I finally woke for the day to find myself alone. Inside the room that held the view screen, I found Nalla’s remains gone. I wanted to face her one last time to say I was sorry.

“We took her body elsewhere,” Willow said, entering the room.

“I wanted to offer my apology and prayers,” I said.

“She was our sister, and she will be remembered as such. Mistress Cali agreed. Nalla will be remembered a courtesan.”

“I’m not sure what to do. I face a heavy burden.”

“And the other you, she [...]
