Executive Summary of The Daily Stoic

Did You Know?

Stephen Hanselman shared how he and Ryan Holiday have created a resource at www.dailystoic.com. They hoped to cast an extensive net with The Daily Stoic, which they have spent two years putting together.

Few words have been more altered by appropriation and misapplication than the modern derivative of Stoicism's ancient philosophy. Today, stoic is a word presented vacant of the original quest for enlivenment that animated Stoic philosophy. Instead, it is warped to mean the very opposite – a kind of unfeeling self-control that approaches pursed-lipped resignation. But two millennia ago, Stoicism appeared as a life-affirming platform for being – a sort of super vitamin for the soul, strengthening the human spirit against the trials of daily life, against the destructive attacks of the world, and, above all, against its weaknesses. At its heart was the concept that the four cardinal virtues – courage, justice, wisdom, and self-control – are the seedbed of human flourishing. All of our afflictions arise from our perception and interpretation of experiences rather than the events themselves.
