Turn

By Savannah Gallien

As I sat here staring at the sunset and how bright and beautiful the world was, I realized I was so close to never seeing this again. Not too long ago, all I could see was darkness in the world and hoped it would get better.

But wait, let’s start from the beginning.

My name is Brooke. I have always loved to be around people but always felt like I was the shy girl in the corner. I would speak softly and run away from confrontation because I didn’t like the way it would make me feel. I would get picked on a lot in school because I was different then everyone else. Kids would call me names or whisper about me and laugh.

I knew that when kids would be mean, I should feel mad and upset with them, but I felt sad for them instead. I felt sad that they needed to treat others that way. No matter how they treated me, I always treated them with kindness. I guess that is a good thing because I’m sure that being kind and never letting others bring me down is what kept me safe all this time.

I live with my grandparents in a small town called DoomBrock. My grandparents took me in when my mother turned about a year ago from the virus.

You see, there was a virus that began to take over the world. The virus was caused by being hateful and selfish. When someone would act in a hateful or selfish way, the virus would start to slowly turn their heart black. The more hateful or selfish they would become, the more the heart would turn black. Once the heart would become completely filled with the blackness, the person would turn to stone. It spread so fast because once one person was acting in these horrible ways, it became so much easier for everyone else to act the same. Even someone who was normally kind hearted could act in horrible ways.

That’s how my mom ended up getting the virus. My mother was one of the kindest and most caring people ever. But when so many people were being negative and only doing things for themselves, it made her feel upset. She started to act hateful to those people and it began to turn her heart black. So much hateful and selfish actions started this way and just continued to spread. Since the virus started, the world has become quite lonely.

I didn’t have many friends left, and those that were left were afraid of the virus so they stayed away from others. I spent most of my time with my grandparents in their lab. My grandparents were amazing scientist. They had received many award for inventions and helped create many cures for sickness that saved many lives.

My grandparents were starting on a serum to help transform the world back to the way it was before the virus. Sadly, they could not work together on parts of the serum and argued whose would work better, and began to be hateful toward each other. This started to turn their hearts black, and they too caught the virus and turned to stone before the serum was complete.

So it was up to me to figure it out. I knew that my grandparent were both amazing scientist and they were close to finding something that would help. Instead of choosing which was better, I used both of their ideas together and believed I created the cure. I was scared of failing but knew I had to try.

I tested the serum on my grandparents, but at first it did not work. Thinking about the virus and what caused it made me realize that maybe I needed to reverse the actions and show kindness as well as use the serum. I tried again and this time I made sure tell my grandparents how amazing they were and how much I loved them.

Slowly the stone dissipated and my grandparent seemed to have woken up from a deep sleep. They didn’t understand what had happened. I explained that their actions towards each other were selfish, and eventually they too had caught the virus. They couldn’t believe that they were able to act that way and be hateful towards each other.

We began to use the serum on others along with saying kind things to them. Slowly people began to come back to us. They too were surprised at how fast hateful and selfish actions could spread and destroy the world. Together we all worked on curing the world and being kinder to each other. People all over the world worked harder to be nice and understanding and show kindness.

The world seemed so dark not so long ago. But seeing that if we could take some of the hate and selfishness out of the world and be more kind to each other, the world could be a bright and beautiful place again.

The End

My Adventure with Mister Lava

By Benjamin Farfour

My name is Ben. My family and I are going on a vacation to beautiful Oahu, Hawaii.

We boarded the plane with luggage stuffed with our favorite things and items needed for our week long outing. Flying was amazing. However, it did make me a little nervous being so high up for such a long flight to Hawaii.

Finally, we landed at the airport in Oahu, Hawaii. We took some time to stretch our legs and then went to collect our luggage. Dad called for a taxi to take us to our hotel. When the taxi arrived, the driver came out to help us. I couldn’t believe how tall he was! The man was at least seven feet tall and weighed more than 250 pounds. He lifted two or three suitcases at a time like they were full of feathers.

He drove us to our hotel. Our hotel had a huge mountain behind it. My Mom told us that we would be going to that mountain in two days. The driver helped us make our way into the hotel. He gave my sister and I necklaces made of red stones native to the island of Oahu. He explained that the necklaces were for good luck and protection. The driver smiled at us and then quickly drove away.

The next day began with a hearty breakfast followed by a boat ride around the island. We spotted several dolphins and whales swimming in the ocean. Our guide explained the history of the island including the volcano named Mauna Kea, meaning “white mountain.” This volcano has been silent for more than 4,500 years. When the tour guide stood up, I realized that the tour guide was the same person that had taken us to our hotel last night.

Was he spying on my family? Why us? It all seemed a bit fishy to me.

After a good night’s rest, it was time for our next adventure. We were going to explore the volcano named Mauna Kea. My family and I jumped into the van, excited about the day ahead. While exploring with my sister, Peyton, I wanted to investigate a small cave- like opening at the base of the volcano. It was very dark and quite smelly.

Suddenly, we heard a strange noise that sounded like it was coming from inside the volcano. There was a stream of bubbling, red, hot lava coming toward us. The lava was rising higher and higher. Peyton started to panic and I cried out for help. Mom and Dad could not hear us. We were alone.

As I looked up, the lava just inches from Peyton’s feet, I saw an outline of a very tall, slender man reaching for us. The man whose face I recognized as the taxi driver and the boat tour guide stood before us. He told my sister and I to jump across the hot lava. We were very scared and couldn’t believe that he was standing in the lava! I had to think fast, so I grabbed my sister and did as he said. We jumped and he caught us! We were safe.

Peyton and I were both stunned. I asked the man who he was. He said his name was Mister Lava. He had been the one to give us the necklace for good luck and protection. Mister Lava took us to his lair in the lava because the volcano was still erupting and he could not reveal his true identity. In the lair, it was very bright because of the lava. It was also pretty hot, but our necklaces protected us from the excruciating heat. I asked him how he became Mister Lava.

He said, “I will tell you, but you have got to promise you will not tell anyone.”

I said, “I promise.”

“A long time ago, when I was a boy, my family came to visit a large village that was here. I was given the precious stones, just like the ones you are wearing. We went exploring around the island too, but there was little civilization back then. We could see this very volcano in the distance. I was very afraid of the volcano. One of the older village chiefs gave me the stone for protection. I was still scared and did not believe the stone would work. I woke up that night to lots of screaming. The ground was shaking and I fell. When I fell, the rocks were pushed into my leg. I was able to get up and walk right through the lava with no pain. I looked for my parents but could not find them. I never did. The only person I saw was the old village chief who told me that I must now be the protector. That was 4,500 years ago.”

When Mister Lava finished his story, he said that it was safe to take us out of the volcano. He helped us sneak to where we could see people getting on a boat. He pointed out my mom and dad and said, “Run.”

I turned around to thank him, but he was gone.

“Flight 234, now boarding!”

“Ben wake up!”

It was all just a dream. I was still in North Carolina at the airport.

As I entered the plane, the pilot greeted us at the door. The pilot was a very tall man with eyes and a voice that I remembered from my dream. He gave me a quick wink and a nod as I took my seat.

This is going to be a safe trip, I just know it!

The End

How I Lost My Name

By Allysin Cook

I would like to open up this story by telling you my name, but I lost it!

It was a sunny day and I was daydreaming. Mrs. Spell, my teacher said, “Why isn’t your name on your paper?”

I said I’ve lost it. The only way to find it would to be to search for the letters. I knew I should begin my hunt around school. Mrs. Spell went to the front of the class and started teaching. I raised my hand and asked the teacher if I could go to the bathroom, and she said yes. I walked out the door and went searching.

First I went to the gym and looked in the soccer ball bag. It was not in there. I looked around the soccer goal. Guess what? It was in there! I found “S.” That wasn’t too hard.

Next I went to the bathroom because I really needed to go. I did my business and washed my hands. I headed back to my class and did my work. Time went by and before I knew it, it was lunch time.

We were having alphabet soup, my favorite. I got my food and began to eat. I continued to look for my letters. I noticed that there were no “Ls” anywhere in my soup. I asked my friend if I could see her soup, and she said yes. I looked in her soup; there were no “Ls” in her soup either. I asked Johnny if I could see his soup he said sure. I looked in his soup and he didn’t have a single “L.” Maybe this was going to be harder than I thought.
