1. The Most Serious and Scariest Time EVER

WEIRD stuff happens LOT a at our school.

Like the time with the DEMON DINNER LADIES and the PHANTOMLOLLIPOPMAN and the headteacher who was a VAMPIRE RAT. 2

But what I am about to tell you is probably the MOSTSERIOUS and

thing that has EVER happened to us.

And it wasn’t just because we were all on a HIGH-SPEEDTRAIN at MIDNIGHT when it happened!

It was because of the

3and the

and all the

And we probably should have KNOWN things were BAD when Mr Beattie started CRYING.

But it was when we saw a bag of Gary Petrie’s STOLENCRISPS lying on the platform that things got OUT OFCONTROL. 4

And I just KNEW that someone was going to jump off the train in the middle of the night.

But I didn’t know that it would be me.

2. The Sleeper Train

When Miss Jones told us we were going on an EXTRA-SPECIAL school trip we all gasped. Then when she told us we were getting the TRAIN we all gasped again! But nothing could have prepared us for what she said next. Because THAT’S when Miss 6Jones told us we were getting the

to LONDON and that we would be going to BED on the train.

I stared at my friend Jodi, and she stared back. And then we both stared at Zach, and he had his mouth wide open and it was because none of us could BELIEVE what Miss Jones was saying to us!

I’d heard of the SLEEPER TRAIN before and how people get on it and go to sleep and wake up in the place that they need to 7be. But I never thought that I would be going on one!

I thought that sleeper trains were just for BUSINESSPEOPLE in SUITS who had to get to London to have

at five o’clock in the morning.

EVERYONE started asking Miss Jones loads of questions about the SLEEPER TRAIN. Like, where would we all sleep? And did we have to wear pyjamas? And would there be a toilet on the train? 8

And Gary Petrie was jumping up and down and asking if he could come in FANCY DRESS (which didn’t really make any sense, but sometimes Gary Petrie doesn’t really make sense).

That’s when Maisie started shaking and saying that she was worried because trains are

and that she didn’t think she would be able to go to sleep SITTINGUP.

So that’s when I said I thought she definitely 9WOULD be able to sleep sitting up and then I reminded her of the time that she fainted while sitting on the toilet when it accidentally flushed before she was finished. And how she just stayed sitting up for ages, even though she’d fainted.

But then Miss Jones said that we didn’t have to worry about sleeping sitting up because we were all going to have our own BEDS on the train.

That’s when me and everyone got REALLY excited because I didn’t even know that you got beds on trains!

And I didn’t know what sort of DUVET10COVERS they would have but I really hoped they looked like GIANTTRAINTICKETS or something like that because that would be really cool.

11So anyway, Jodi put both her hands on her head and held on tight to her hair, which is what she sometimes does when she’s REALLY excited about something.

Then she said, “It’s going to be like one of the old movies I’ve watched with my mum! We’ll have our own little bit of the train to ourselves. I can’t believe it! This is going to be AMAZING.”

And as soon as Jodi said that I totally remembered a black-and-white film Jodi’s mum made us watch where everyone was wearing hats and long coats and they were all running to get on the train that had 12STEAM coming out of it. Then two of them fell in love but one of them couldn’t get on the train because he didn’t have a ticket so they had to BREAKUP. And when I asked Jodi’s mum why he didn’t just BUY a ticket she said that it was because it was

So anyway, that’s when I knew that there was NOWAY Jodi’s mum wasn’t going to try to come on our school trip with us. And that she was probably going to ask Miss Jones if she could be a CHAPERONE. And I 13knew that if Miss Jones said no, she would probably just buy a ticket and come anyway.

Miss Jones was trying to answer all of our questions, but there were too many of us with our hands up and some people were just SHOUTINGOUT because they were

to follow the rules.

So that’s when Miss Jones stopped answering our questions and put BOTH of her hands up in the air. And we all 14eventually went silent and did the same because that’s what the teachers do at our school if they want us to stop talking and

Then Miss Jones put her arms down and smiled a really big smile.

And I could tell that she was JUST as excited as we were about going on the sleeper train. And I thought that it was maybe because Miss Jones quite likes sleeping and I know that for a fact because every Monday when we come in and ask her where she 15went that weekend, she always LAUGHS and says SLEEP really loudly. So we know how much she loves going to bed.

So anyway, we all STARED at Miss Jones.

And then she took a DEEPBREATH and said, “Children. I can assure you that this is going to be a trip you will NEVER FORGET!”

And we all

and nodded because we knew that she was RIGHT.

3. Bacon Sizzler, Anyone?

When my mum and dad dropped me off at the train station, Mum got out of the car and gave me a quick hug and Dad handed me my bag through the window and they were both smiling LOADS. And then they drove off really fast. 17

I had no idea why they were in such a RUSH but I didn’t really have time to think about it because that’s when Maisie and her mum arrived and Maisie looked like she was wearing about ten coats!

I asked Maisie if she was OK but she had a

look on her face. And I think she nodded YES but I couldn’t really tell because of all the COATS.

Then Zach arrived and said, “Whoa. That’s big!” 18

And THAT’S when I saw that Maisie had brought the biggest suitcase I have ever SEEN and it looked more like a TRUNK from Olden Times than a suitcase!

Miss Jones got a weird look on her face when she saw Maisie’s TRUNK and whispered something to Maisie’s mum about LIMITED SPACE.

19But Maisie’s mum looked a bit like she was going to start CRYING so that’s when Miss Jones said, “It’s fine! It’s fine! We’ll manage, don’t worry.”

Then Maisie’s mum

Maisie and started crying and saying loads of stuff like, “I love you so much!” and, “Remember to phone me EVERYHOUR!” and, “Wear the extra coats I’ve packed for you. Who KNOWS how cold it’s going to be on that train at night!” 20

Miss Jones put her hand on Maisie’s mum’s shoulder and said, “I’m sure they have heating on the train. We’ll take good care of Maisie. It’s time for you to go now.”

But Maisie’s mum DIDN’T go. She sat down on the ground and pulled Maisie on to her lap and wrapped her arms around her tight and started swaying backwards and forwards, saying, “I can’t believe my little ANGELWINGS is going all the way to London without me! HOWISTHIS POSSIBLE!”

I had

21how we were going to get Maisie’s mum to let go of Maisie.

But then all of a sudden Maisie’s mum’s eyes shot open and she looked up at Miss Jones and said, “Wait… Are there any spare–”

But before Maisie’s mum could even SAY the word TICKETS, Miss Jones shook her head really fast and said,

Then Miss Jones started saying that it was time for her to leave again and something about Maisie’s mum’s car being parked on 22double yellow lines and there being a TRAFFICWARDEN about. And that’s when Maisie’s mum stood up and handed Maisie to us and Zach put his arms around Maisie and said, “Don’t worry. I’ll take really good care of her for you.”

And Maisie’s mum nodded and started to walk

REALLYSLOWLY

back to her car. And she was walking so slowly that it reminded me of how me and Jodi walk to the dinner hall when we can smell the shepherd’s pie and we don’t want 23to go (because the shepherd’s pie at our school is disgusting!).

So anyway, when Maisie’s mum got to her car, it took her AGES to get her keys out and AGES to open the door and

to get inside.

And it was obvious she didn’t want to go because she is very protective of Maisie and she does things like make Maisie wear three jumpers in case she gets cold (even in summer) and gives Maisie THREE packed 24lunches in case she loses the first two.

We all watched as Maisie’s mum eventually started to drive away.

And we all watched as she stopped her car a little bit along the road and put the lights out and slouched down in her seat, pretending she wasn’t there.

That’s when Miss Jones took a REALLY deep breath through her NOSTRILS and shook her head and said, “OK. Time to go down to the platform. Our train will be here soon.” 25

I looked at Zach and he did a SADSMILE and I knew that it was because he was thinking about Jodi, just like I was.

Because we’d found out that Jodi wasn’t able to come to the school trip on the SLEEPERTRAIN because of having to be a BRIDESMAID at her aunt’s wedding.

It felt really weird going on a

without Jodi. But once Jodi had stopped CRYING and SCREAMING about not being 26able to come, she had taken a DEEP BREATH and told us all that she wanted us to GOWITHOUTHER and that we had to

And also that she was going to VIDEO CALL us on Zach’s phone and make us keep it on ALLNIGHT even after she’d fallen ASLEEP so that it would be like she was there with us.

So anyway, when we got down to the platform I started to SHAKE a bit. And it 27wasn’t just because I was super excited (which I was!) it was also because it was dark and cold and we could all see our BREATH when we breathed out.

That’s when Gary Petrie started going around, blowing his breath in everyone’s face and saying, “CHOO-CHOO.

And when I asked why his breath stank of CHEESE, he just smiled and opened his jacket and I saw that he had a giant bag of cheese puffs STAPLED to the inside of his jacket. 28

Then he opened the other side of his jacket and he had ANOTHER bag of crisps stapled to that side too!

Gary smiled and said, “Bacon Sizzler, anyone?”

29And even though I LOVE Bacon Sizzlers I didn’t want any of Gary’s Coat Crisps because I was worried they might be WARM (which is disgusting). Like when you sit down in a seat that someone else has just got up from and it’s WARM from their old BOTTOMHEAT.

That’s when we all heard

in the distance and Gary shut his coat and yelled, “THETRAIN’SCOMING!”

Miss Jones and the other teachers told us all to stand behind the line. So everybody 30stood with their toes just touching the YELLOWLINE and no more because we were all

to see the SLEEPERTRAIN.

We watched as the train slowed down and eventually STOPPED.

I looked at Zach and he was GRINNING and I knew that I was TOO because this was

We were going on a SLEEPERTRAIN!31

That’s when the train made a BEEPINGSOUND and the DOORS OPENED and Maisie gripped my hand and SQUEEZED because this was ACTUALLY HAPPENING.

Miss Jones clapped her hands and said, “OK, everyone. Remember the plan. Listen CAREFULLY to EVERYTHING Miss Yu says at

She’s in CHARGE. Now, off you go!”

It felt a bit weird that Miss Jones wasn’t coming with us because SHE was our 32teacher and the trip had been HER idea. And it was also a bit weird that there was a

Miss Yu, coming with us. We’d only just met her a few days ago and she was in CHARGE, even though she couldn’t even get our names right!

So that’s when I said, “Miss Jones… Are you SURE you can’t come with us?”

Because even though I was

33to be going on the trip it felt strange being away from Mum AND Dad AND Jodi AND Miss Jones all at the same time.

Miss Jones smiled at me and took my hands and said, “I wish I could come, but I’ve got a very important thing to do. Do you remember I told you that?”

I nodded because I DID remember.

Then Miss Jones said, “You’re going to have a WONDERFUL time, Izzy. Miss Yu and Mrs Leppard and Mr Beattie will take good care of you, OK? Now, off you go.”

So I nodded and smiled and looked up at Miss Jones and THAT’S when I saw the
