THE INVISIBLE JOURNEY

The translucent journey that will

take you beyond reality

The story I am about to tell requires a reader with a clean heart and curious attitude towards life. If you don’t have at least one of these characteristics, then it would be better if you put this novel on the dusty shelf dedicated to unread and forgotten books. However, even in that case, the story will start to beat so strongly that you won’t be able to help but pick it up and read at least the first few pages. The first page will lead you to the second, the second to the third, the third to the next, and so on until the end. And then?

The ending may leave you in a state of dissatisfaction. Enough to make you want to go beyond the last page, beyond the last point, proceeding with the story at will, creating another novel. Is this not how life itself proceeds? You often start with an idea, with well-defined contours, thinking that you have finally found the way and the direction to follow.

Then, she arrives. The Queen of Life with her creative and irrational force, never equal to herself and constantly evolving. The narrated events run on multiple lines, not always parallel. It will be like having a free and rebellious watch on your wrist that marks only moments of love and friendship. You will enter a dimension of Time that doesn’t fear Time. Therefore, dear reader, do not expect a well-ordered and reassuring story. There will be no boundaries nor roles established in this novel. The author, the various storytellers, the paper reader, and the reader in flesh will enter and exit the pages, confusing one with the other. You will no longer perceive the distinction between real and imagined life. Will you be able to follow the magic thread hidden behind the facts? Will you be able to abandon your certainties to immerse yourself in new worlds? And, above all, will you be able to enter this translucent story?

R. S.

It happened many years ago, but the memory of that meeting, on the train that was taking me home after a long journey, will always be written in my sky with magical and brilliant letters. Sitting by the window, lost in thoughts as elusive as the ocher expanses of the wheat fields I had left behind, I didn’t immediately sense her gaze upon me, which was a little embarrassing at first for a frightened and suspicious man such as myself. I turned in annoyance, almost defiantly, but found no monster to defeat. On the contrary...

A young woman, or perhaps a youthful woman, gave me a welcoming and reassuring smile as if she were waiting for me to speak, but I was unable to find anything intelligent enough to say that wouldn’t ruin that singular moment. Better to be silent, I thought. I could see the entire universe in her gaze.

Looking into her eyes, I had the sensation of being transported on an astral voyage among the stars and mysterious planets. I looked back upon her entire life and realized that she couldn’t possibly just be thirty or forty years old. She had seen perhaps a thousand lives. I didn’t want to interrupt that spell between our ancient souls, but her young voice brought me pleasantly back to reality...

“My name is Aurora and I love traveling! It is the source of inspiration for my writing. You always meet interesting people in this world, don’t you agree?”

“Not always, Aurora... You have a beautiful name...”

“It’s just six letters together in a row. Which order are your letters arranged in?”

“A-l-e-x-a-n-d-e-r!”

Bizarre, cheerful, friendly. Obviously, I fell in love with her instantly. She also fell in love with me in a certain sense, even though I realized it was a higher level of Love.

We traveled together for the whole day and, to be honest, I didn’t actually get off at my stop but instead put off the moment of separation from that beautiful otherworldly creature.

“Are you a writer, Aurora?”

“I’m writing at the moment, but I don’t know if I will be able to complete my novel. I am trying to follow the dictates of my soul in this life, but I feel that the gift that has been given to me actually comes from other lives.

Anyone else would have thought her mad, but deep down, who was I to judge her, and above all, how much joy emanated from Aurora’s heart? I much preferred her madness to the gray banality of any other ordinary person. That day, I decided to believe her and join in her game. What did I have to lose? There was nothing that interested me more than her words and her stories. Her every word seemed to come from a deep abyss, from previous existences.

Unfortunately, the end of the day soon knocked at our door.

Aurora took me by the hand gently and told me something that didn’t seem to make much sense:

“Thank you, Alexander! With all my heart, I thank you for what you will do for me. That is, not for me, but for someone who is very dear to me.”

“Aurora, what are you saying? I don’t understand... I don’t know... what will I do and for whom?”

“It’s too soon to understand now. I have to go...”

Aurora slowly opened her suitcase and took out a crumpled notebook. She looked at it as a mother looks at her small son, and handed it to me saying:

“Take care of my words, Alexander! Only you can help me.”

Aurora hugged me tightly and, in that moment beyond time, our hearts were separated only by her beloved notebook. I couldn’t keep her any longer.

She was lost among the many anonymous passengers, all believing they were original without actually being so.

All that remained of her was that notebook, of which I was now the sole, ignorant custodian. Would I ever see her again? Very unlikely, I thought. As the train regained speed, leaving pieces of the world behind it, my thoughts remained fixed on Aurora like a marble sculpture whose image I would never erase from the colored notebook of my heart.

Speaking of notebooks, I didn’t realize that I was holding her legacy in my hands. Yes, because when she handed it to me, she seemed to be giving me the most precious object among a collection of diamonds.

To the touch, the cover recalled the sensation of freshly ground coffee powder: soft and impalpable. I was alone in the compartment, comfortably seated. By now, the day was imperceptibly giving way to night, anxious to paint the majestic and silent picture of darkness, stained with thick, dark brushstrokes.

Aurora had disappeared, leaving only her words written in slightly childish handwriting in that little school notebook, perhaps a diary, destined to welcome the most important thing for a writer: a story.

I couldn’t wait beyond that dusky evening! I began to avidly read the first pages of the novel, of which I inexplicably found myself to be both guardian and protector.

I could never have imagined that I would be sucked so powerfully into those pages.

Here is what I found: the story of Anita, an enigmatic ageless woman, and her translucent journey in the company of equally enigmatic traveling companions...
