The old educational world of texts is evolving in an incredibly exciting way as our paths to meaning expand and develop with technology. This is a book about embracing this exciting development in the classroom and marrying the ancient art of performance with a brave new world of technology and exploration. Film and theatre are all about discovering new frontiers, being bold and brave enough to challenge boundaries and above all, growing.
You will find two scripts -a stage play and a short film- and a graphic novel in this book. They are all adaptations of a Gothic Horror story by W.W Jacobs, "The Monkey's Paw", which is as disturbing today as it was over a hundred years ago when it was first written. A class can choose to study this text as a stage play to be performed in the classroom or theatre, or as a screen-play, to be performed, filmed, edited and screened or as a visual medium; exploring the world of visual literacy through the comic strip. Indeed, a class may choose to study all three and compare and contrast the disciplines, the differences and limitations that set them apart.
The scripts- although similar- are different. The original story narrative exists in the landscape of the mind, we not only hear and see the characters, but are also exposed to their thoughts and feelings on the page. The stage play exists in the landscape of the spoken word, as information is relayed only by what actors say and do, information about feelings and thoughts must be communicated in a visual and audible way. In contrast, a screenplay exists in the landscape of the visual. Information about thoughts and feelings must be communicated by what we see on the screen. Sound and music are of course a part of this also, but information is relayed in new ways, given the endless opportunities to layer images and sound.
This is a book for English, Drama and Media teachers alike, and at a rudimentary level contains scripts that can be read aloud in the classroom. The subject matter is dark, intriguing and at the least, engaging. But beyond this it is also an entry point into short film, which can be studied through the website www.chalkboard thespians.com, and will take a class from concept to screen with little to no budget. Above all, it is a book of initiative and innovation, opening the door to possibilities and hopefully empowering a new generation of teachers and students to express themselves and make meaning.
Shane Emmett is an actor, international award-winning filmmaker and high school teacher. Completing a degree in Media and Communications in Sydney in 1998,
As an actor, Shane most recently won a ‘Best International Actor’ award at the Move Me Film Festival in Belgium and ‘Best International Actor’ at the Genre Celebration Festival’ for his role in the film ‘Guerrilla Wedding’. In television he has worked on many award-winning dramas and in recent years played editor of The Australian “Max Newton" in Power Games, home wrecker "Mark Gilmour" in Home & Away, jaded husband "Colin Lowndes" in Rush and Oncologist ‘Dr Patrick’ in Offspring.
As a filmmaker, Shane has won numerous international awards including ‘Best Film’ at Tropfest New York in 2008, Inside Film ‘Best Short Documentary’ in 2009, ‘Best Short Documentary’ at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2011 and most recently ‘Best International Comedy’ at the Genre Celebration Festival in 2018.
Above all he has also worked as an English high school teacher in Australia for twenty years and continues to be a champion of drama and film in the classroom.
