Here's an Introduction of What You're About to Discover in this Premium Summary of The Tyranny of Merit: What's Become of the Common Good? by Michael J. Sandel :

“The Tyranny of Merit: What’s Become of the Common Good?” is Michael Sanel’s newest book wherein the author tries to make sense of civic life which for him hasn’t been going very well. Sandel discusses the divide between winners and losers and how this gap has been deepening resulting in individualism and the corrosion of the common good. He emphasizes heavily on meritocracy and its adverse effects on society such as hubris and resentment towards the credentialed elites who seem to look down on the people less successful than they are.

The Tyranny of Merit has already enlightened the minds of many readers including Elliot Gerson an Executive Vice President for Policy and Public Programs and International Partners in The Aspen Institute as he says “The book will be a classic on the founding question of the Aspen Institute: “what is the good society?” And it makes a point that will be surprising if not shocking to many: the answer isn’t meritocracy.” It has also earned ratings of 4.4 out of 5 on Amazon.com and 4.2 out of 5 on Goodreads.com

Executive Summary of The Tyranny of Merit

†††

The central theme and idea that Michael Sandel aims to point out through his most recent book “The Tyranny of Merit: What’s Become of the Common Good?”  is the inability of the governing public philosophy and the reigning ideology of politicians to address the inequality and the huge gap between the affluent and the lower class. The author points out that instead of directly attacking and resolving this issue, these higher-class political elites will rather reassure the public that they too can rise if they earn a four-year college degree.

Sandel emphasizes the divide between winners and losers and how it has been deepening through the decades. He says that inequality and the attitude towards winning and losing are to blame for the divide of classes. The author heavily discussed this way of thinking towards success or what he likes to call “The Meritocratic Ideal” where the winners deserve their winnings and losers have no one else to blame but themselves because according to this ideal, everyone has an equal chance. However, Sandel argues that in reality, the playing field heavily favors a privileged few and not everyone has an equal chance to rise and prosper. There are children born to poor families who most likely are to stay poor when they grow up because of their situation and that children of affluent families on the other hand, easily have an edge because of the advantages that their parents pass on to them.
