'This is a locals' pub. And what's the problem with locals? They die.' 'Inconsiderate bastards.' All over London, public houses become private flats. Tomorrow The Anchor closes for good. It's the end of an era, but Kenny and the gang are going out with a bang. There's a blow-up sheep, karaoke and a lot of Campari. There's secrets and grudges and forgotten dreams. As the front doors are locked and the bar is drunk dry, there's a lot more to lose than just a pub. Anna Jordan's play We Anchor in Hope premiered at The Bunker, London, in 2019, produced by The Bunker and W14 Productions in association with the Royal Court Theatre, and directed by Artistic Director Chris Sonnex.

A Note About this Play
We Anchor in Hope was commissioned by the Royal Court Theatre as part of Beyond the Court in 2016. Chris Sonnex sent me into pubs in Pimlico to buy drinks for people and talk to them about their lives, their area and what pubs meant to them. This play is a fictional piece in response to the many chats I had with some fantastic and generous people. We performed it as a rehearsed reading at a pub in Pimlico in 2016 and it has been reworked for this, its premiere at The Bunker in 2019. Cheers Pimlico.

Characters
PEARL, twenty, slim, tough, attractive, tomboyish
BILBO, twenty-four, scruffy and a little bit scrawny, a face that shows worries beyond his years
FRANK, seventy-seven, a touch of tired class about him. His vowels are RP but he occasionally drops his ‘T’s and ‘H’s
SHAUN, fifty, Northern Irish, athletic figure, strong shoulders, suntanned and weather-beaten from years of work outside. Ruggedly handsome
KENNY, fifty, the look of someone who’s not been sleeping well

/ at the end of a line indicates coming in very sharply on cue – almost overlapping
