Behind the Scenes
With every issue, we strive to bring you the most
inspiring projects and features we can fit on each page.
is issue is no exception from an extremely well-done
“Classic Gnome” by Mehmet Berat Tas (Page 35) and
the “Peace, Man” caricature carving from Bruce Ankeny
(Page 16) to a great chip carving project from Nikolas
Rocha (Page 32) and a super
simple whittled dolphin from
Tom Hindes (Page 73). From true
beginner to advanced, we know you’ll
discover a new carving technique or
project to help define your own style and
push your creative boundaries.
In addition to great projects, part of
our mission at
WCI
, going forward,
will be to share some behind the scenes
glimpses of the carving community. As
with many communities, much work is
done by people who are often not in
the spotlight like show promoters and
tool makers.
We think you'll enjoy our fascinating glimpse of what’s involved
in the creation of carving knives and gouges. e folks at Flexcut
were kind enough to give us a peek into their manufacturing
process, which is something the general public is not privy to.
Flexcut’s work involves many people within their organization, as
well as feedback and testing from pro carvers, industry experts,
and carving hobbiests who are all driven to create the ultimate
carving tools. e more we understand where and how our tools
are made, the more engaged we become within the carving world.
In this issue, we also share a few pages covering the Lancaster
County Woodcarvers' 50th Wonders in Wood show this past
March. As a sponsor of the event, we met many of our
WCI
subscribers, new and veteran carvers, and some CCA members
who traveled far to this record-breaking event. e energy was
high and the sense of community was never more prevalent.
e event was well organized as a result of dedicated people
who worked behind the scenes for a year to make the weekend a
memorable one for everyone.
All of us at
WCI
encourage you to attend carving events in
your area. Talk to the exhibitors, attend seminars, learn from
the professionals who are there with one mission—to teach and
inspire, a mission very near and dear to us at
WCI
, as well!
Happy carving!

SUMMER 2025
Making New Friends
Charles Banks’ “Laid-Back
Guy” from issue #100 was a
fun carving to do. Since I like
flat-plane style carving, it was
challenging enough to keep my
interest. The legs are a little bit
tricky to lay out and carve. The
slight casual lean of the figure
was different, and I wanted to
make it to hang around in my
shop. I call it “Making New
Friends.” I’m leaving it with
a “carved finish,” as I like the
way it looks. Thank you for a
fun pattern.

Alton, Ill.
Farmhouse Memories
When I saw Robert Stadtlander’s “Winter Barn Scene” from
the winter issue, I was amazed by how much it reminded me of
my aunt’s farm. I made some slight changes to really match her
barn’s features and delivered it as a Christmas present.
Johnny Kirk

I had so much
fun carving Bruce
Ankeny’s “After the
Sleigh Ride Santa
Caricature” from the
issue #105. Thanks
for printing so many
wonderful projects

carvers out there!
Buddy Overby

Midnight Cowboy
After learning
woodcarving while
teaching skiing in
Colorado, I began
carving cowboys and
making carvings of my
friends, such as a car
mechanic, motor officer,
and ski instructor. I
really enjoy emulating
the people I am close
with in my life and
subjects I find interesting
in a wooden medium.

Elephant Delight
I came across Pete Zanauskas’ “Cartoon
Elephant” from issue #102 and decided to
transform it into a 3D version. I also added a
felted piece to the top of the trunk to give it a
little bit of a pop. It was a simple design that
turned into a fun carve.

Under the Sea
For my latest carving, I power carved a submarine
from solid pine. I crafted the propeller from a popsicle
stick and attached it to a nail so the propeller will
rotate. I finished the piece by attaching the submarine
to a piece of driftwood.

Cottonwood
Lighthouse
I came across a
two-foot piece of
cottonwood bark
and decided to
carve a lighthouse
as my next project.
I also ended up
carving water, a
dock, and a boat
to the base of the
piece and added
lights to the top of
the lighthouse.

Brandon Kroon
Drouin, Australia
Brandon Kroon has always had the
desire to work with his hands, ranging
from creating music to woodcarving.
After picking up his first chainsaw in
2013, Brandon knew he discovered his next
creative hands-on passion. Through chainsaw
carving, he says, “My goal is to pursue a
high level of creativity, seeking out unique
and challenging designs and the chance
to learn something new.” When he is
not working on commissions, Brandon
enjoys the richness in opportunities at
carving competitions where he can
bring the ideas in his mind to reality.
See more of Brandon’s work @bkcarving
on Instagram, or visit his website
at bkcarving.com.
Tom Wilkinson
Linden, N.J.
Tom Wilkinson discovered his passion for woodcarving in 2015 when
he began taking classes at the American Woodcarving School in
Wayne, N.J. Since then, Tom has always had five or six carving projects
going at the same time. “I love experimenting with different species
of wood, and I enjoy using my mishmash set of tools to carve my
creations,” he said. Tom’s projects are often inspired by people’s
faces, nature, and art, such as a cottonwood sea captain that
was modeled after a collection of nautical paintings.
