Unlock the more straightforward side of A Climate of Fear with this concise and insightful summary and analysis!

This engaging summary presents an analysis of A Climate of Fear by Fred Vargas, the ninth novel featuring Commissaire Adamsberg. Two apparent suicides are linked by a mysterious symbol found near the bodies, drawing Adamsberg into an investigation involving a double murder committed in Iceland ten years earlier and a secretive association dedicated to reenacting the early days of the French Revolution. Through a gripping dual narrative, the novel raises unsettling questions about the rationale behind human choices and the influence our ancestors have on our behaviour. Fred Vargas is a French writer, historian and archaeologist who has written several cycles of detective novels. She has won a range of literary awards, both in France and abroad.

The main passion of Fred Vargas (real name Frédérique Audouin-Rouzeau) is the Middle Ages. She is an expert in eukaryotic archaeology, in which she holds a doctorate, and wrote her first novel, Les Jeux de l’amour et de la mort (“Games of Love and Death”, 1986), while on a dig. A Climate of Fear

A secret in Iceland and the bloodshed of the Terror

Genre: crime novelReference edition: Vargas, F. (2017) A Climate of Fear. Trans. Reynolds, S. London: Transworld.1st edition: 2015 (first English edition 2016)Themes: inquiry, murder, cannibalism, French Revolution, guillotine, Iceland

A simple letter that a dying woman tries in vain to post ends up in the pocket of Marie-France and triggers a new inquiry, led by Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg, the head of the Serious Crime Squad in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. In the course of the investigation, the reader discovers the habits and secrets of two clans: the first is a wealthy family who live on a stud farm, while the second is a 700-strong group who regularly reenact the first National Assemblies held during the French Revolution and are led by a man who bears an uncanny resemblance to Robespierre. The two seemingly unrelated groups are linked by a series of murders and family histories soaked in the blood of the French Revolution.

Summary

A mysterious letter

Obituaries have fascinated Marie-France since she read the name of Alice Gauthier, a woman she saved from a nasty fall near a post box, in one. When she finds a letter written by Alice in the pocket of her coat, Marie-France decides to post it for her. However, she does not know that Alice’s death was no accident: she was found in her bathtub, fully dressed and made up, with her wrists slashed. Commissaire Bourlin from the 15th arrondissement of Paris, who is in charge of the case, is not prepared to let it drop. This apparent suicide is suspicious: the dead woman left no note and no money, and, as far as anyone knows, had no problems. However, time is of the essence, as the judge wants to close the case. Only two details could keep the investigation alive: a strange symbol discovered near the bathtub, and a neighbour who heard a man called André visit the victim the day before her mysterious death. There must be a story behind the symbol, so Bourlin asks for help from Commandant Adrien Danglard, a very erudite man from the Serious Crime Squad in the 13th arrondissement, led by Commissaire Adamsberg. Unfortunately, Danglard is unable to interpret the symbol.
