Camilla Läckberg is a Swedish writer who was born in Fjällbacka, a Swedish coastal town which she uses as the setting for most of her novels, in 1974. She is the author of nearly a dozen crime novels, which have all enjoyed great success, both in Sweden and abroad. She received the Swedish People’s Literature Award in 2006, and her novel The Ice Princess won France's Grand Prix de Littérature Policière for Best International Crime Novel in 2008. All of her novels paint a picture of life in Fjällbacka, and follow the recurring characters of Erica Falck and her partner, police commissioner Patrik Hedström. Her novels are characterised by the emphasis they place on human relationships, and in particular, on the theme of family.

The Gallows Bird

A critique of modern society

Genre: crime novelReference edition: Läckberg, C. (2011) The Gallows Bird. Trans. Murray, S.T. London: HarperCollins.1st edition: 2006Themes: reality TV, alcoholism, violence, incest, police investigation

The Gallows Bird is the fourth novel in the series featuring the characters of Erica Falck and Patrik Hedström. First translated into English in 2011, it follows The Stone Cutter (2005) and precedes The Hidden Child (2007). As in her other novels, Läckberg creates a crime novel which is driven by personal drama. Her skill lies in weaving a web of various interlinking plotlines, each of which has its own unique ending. The Gallows Bird is also a moral reflection on alcoholism and a scathing critique of reality television programmes.

Summary

Childhood memories

A man, whose identity is not revealed, muses on some childhood memories. He loved his tender, caring mother unconditionally. She called him “the gallows bird”, and would prevent him and his sister from leaving the house. Although she made them feel safe, both children had a certain taste for freedom and a desire to discover the outside world. However, when they expressed this desire, their mother lost her temper.
