While continuing to write for the theater, Schmitt also wrote novels (The Alternative Hypothesis, 2001), short stories(The Most Beautiful Book in the World, 2006) and autofiction (My Life with Mozart, 2005). Recently, he got behind the camera and adapted two of his works for the big screen, including Oscar and the Lady in Pink.

Oscar and the Lady in Pink

A story full of emotion

Genre: novelReference edition: Schmitt, É-E. (2002) Oscar et la Dame rose. Paris: Magnard.1First edition: 2002Themes: disease, religion, hospital, childhood, life, death

Oscar and the Lady in Pink, published in 2002, is part of The Cycle of the Invisible, a series of novels in which the writer features children who are confronted with different beliefs. Through conversations between an older character and a child, Schmitt shows how spirituality can help someone to live fully.

The novel introduces us to Oscar, a young boy who is suffering from leukemia, through the letters he addresses to God. He begins to write them based on the advice of Mamie Rose, an old woman who is responsible for comforting sick children, with whom he forms a friendship. In addition to dealing with spirituality, Schmitt manages to brilliantly address the difficult topic of hospitalized children, without falling into the melodramatic.
