During the last centuries the details of the reality have been investigated by science. But the reality isn’t a composition of details. On the contrary, it expresses itself as an ever uncompleted whole. Hence, with their face, human individuals exist as an evolutional expression of that logic incompleteness; as a creative survival attempt endowed to develop a physical mass. This little pamphlet suggests this strange concept using an imaginative track based on a scientific synthesis.

A Scientific Tale about the Face

Some EvoDevo critical concepts

A short pamphlet printed to the knowledge and the forthcoming professional practice of the modern students studying at medical and scientific schools of the western world universities.(but not only for them)

Prologue

The fortune circumstance of this tale began ten years ago, when, unfortunately, I had to interrupt almost all of my surgical practice. Until then I had been a researcher of the university and a maxillo-facial surgeon who used his scientific knowledge as normal in the technological western modernity: observing the body as a sum of parts, I exerted my mind with scalpels, drills and screws, to reconstruct bones suffering from trauma or any other craniofacial pathology. In that period I worked as the only maxillo-facial surgeon in a great hospital, and patients suffering from craniofacial pathologies, especially traumas, were admitted to the ENT institute, where I was assisted in the operation room by the ENT staff. Thanks to that cooperation I had had the privilege to admit and cure patients with wider spectrum of craniofacial pathologies, after their selection at the Odontostomatology Department where I was assigned.

Afterwards everything was different. As often happens, a promoted surgeon was hired and my work at the hospital and university was completely changed, and for the worse. In a very short time I have been stripped from the sense of my work, adapting my mind and professional practice to that new circumstance fully supported by the administration. I tried to suggest that, considering that we were the only two maxillo-facial surgeons, that we had many things to do, and that our unit was supported by the same institute, the ENT, it would be better to collaborate, but no one was willing to listen. No matter what I suggested, it seemed to be inadequate to the established enlightened perspective of the administrators, who gave the newcomer the priority in choice making, excluding me from the decisions regarding surgical strategies and patients’ health. During the following years I sent many letters to many people, but nothing has been changed up to now.

Unluckily, that inescapable professional limitation left me too much time on my (unused) hand, apparently without any possibility to improve myself, to study new surgical techniques and to better understand my profession. The paradox is here, I am sure, as without that experience I couldn’t have been “fulgurated” and this scientific tale about the face couldn’t have ever been sprouted in my mind...
