The skin is the largest organ in the human body and also the heaviest. It not only covers the body but also fulfills the following roles / responsibilities:
––––––––
- It acts as a shield, protecting the body from any form of attack from the external environment – microbial, chemical, and physical, etc.
- It transmits the various senses like heat, cold, pain through the nerves present on it
- It helps in the exchange and connection between the body and the external environment such as temperature regulation, sweat secretion, etc.
––––––––
The skin contains three different layers – namely, the epidermis, which is the outermost layer; the dermis and the hypodermis which is the fatty tissue located under the dermis.
Skin cells constantly get replaced in the body traveling from the inner edge of the epidermis (outermost layer) to the outside of the skin. By the time the skin cells reach the surface of the skin they age, die out and flatten on the surface. All these flat dead skin cells form a protective layer on the body, thus protecting from any viral or bacterial attacks.
The hair follicles in the skin produce oil called sebum, which also mixes with these dead skin cells when they move to the surface of the skin. However, when too much sebum, dead skin cells or hair clumps together on the surface of the skin, it can block the exit of the sebum and dead skin cells through the follicles. This blockage also attracts bacteria and leads to the skin disease called Acne Vulgaris or acne as it is commonly known.
The word ‘acne’ is derived from the Greek word ‘acme’ which means ‘the highest point’. It is known as such due to the swelling and the subsequent appearance of pimples / blackheads / whiteheads on the skin, usually on the face, chest, back, neck and shoulders.

Symptoms of Acne
Acne is characterized by the various types of pimples that can occur on the skin –
- Whiteheads: They are small in size and under the surface of the skin, thus not clearly visible
- Blackheads: They pop out on the surface of the skin and are black in color, hence clearly visible
- Nobles: They are large and solid pimples that appear on the surface of the skin, but are embedded deep into the skin, thus making them very painful
- Pustules: These are formed on the surface and are red and clearly visible, containing pus as the name suggests
- Papules: These are small bumps on the surface of the skin, visible on the skin and pink in color
- Cysts: They are again filled with pus, painful and on the surface of the skin, thus clearly visible. Once healed, they can also leave scars on the skin.
80% of acne cases are observed among adolescents whereas 20% of the cases are seen in adults. It usually starts at the age of 10 to 13 years during puberty, and lasts for about 5 to 10 years, disappearing in the early 20s. People with oily skin are mostly seen to be more prone to suffering from acne.
Acne affects both men and women; however, it is more severe in men whereas women tend to have mild to moderate cases of acne. Acne mostly affects the face, but they are also found on the neck, chest, shoulders, back and arms.
There are a lot of myths surrounding the causes of acne; however, contrary to these myths, acne is not caused by lack of hygiene or bad diet or eating chocolate. In the next chapter we attempt to shed some light on the real causes of acne.
