The Epic Battle for Your Mind: Inner Critic vs. inner Creative Warrior
Right now there’s a major conflict taking place for control of your mind. Yes it’s true. Two powerful internal forces are facing off against each other. And this confrontation is occurring just outside of your awareness.
The first opponent is an adversarial character called your inner Critic (iC). It’s a nasty gremlin that takes your ambition for a brighter future and smothers it before you even realize. Your iC is an insidious demon that has wedged itself between your thoughts and your actions. It’s that negative voice in your head that has hood-winked you into thinking that you’re not smart, talented or worthy enough. Your iC has the power to persuade you to negate your proactive impulses for personal growth.
The other rival in this brawl is called your inner Creative Warrior (iCW). Fortunately, your iCW is on your side and ready to help you overcome the negativity of your iC. Your iCW has a consistently positive and uplifting message. Looking back at my life I can see that there were several attempts by my iCW to break through to my conscious mind. Many were successful in that they pushed me to take action. However, I wasn’t aware of the source at the time. I never gave it a second thought. Or even a first thought.

Awake, 6:00
My alarm rings and I’m totally ready...to go back to sleep. I hit the snooze button and then do it again five minutes later. It’s not that I don’t want to get up and start my day. It’s just that when I’m comfortable I prefer to stay that way. Doesn’t everybody?
Breakfast, 6:34
I’m not hungry today but eat anyway. People say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I’m not one to make waves. They also say that we need to eat healthier. I read that seeds contain high nutritional value. Note to self: order Big Mac with a sesame seed bun. Ahh, I’m feeling healthier already.
On Train, 7:15
Got my seat. It’s technically not mine but everyone knows that’s where I sit. One time, I entered the train to find a stranger sitting there. I plopped onto the seat next to him knowing full well that I could’ve left a free seat between us. He didn’t say a word. Not even a nod. If you ask me, that was quite rude of him.
In Meeting, 9:01
I’m patiently waiting for the first meeting of the day to begin. I hear there’s an issue with one of my projects missing an important deadline. Nothing I can do now except blame it on the system. That works like a get out of jail free card.
Lunch, Noon
Going to my favorite salad bar today. Lots of choices. I recently found a chicken salad made from tofu. Even though it’s obviously not a chicken-based product, the sign still says “super chicken salad.” Once I laughed out loud and snorted. The people near me quietly scattered from my vicinity. I tried to explain to them that nothing came out of my nose. They wouldn’t listen. I don’t understand why rude people are attracted to me.
Before Meeting, 2:57
Just realized there’s only three minutes left before meeting with my boss, aka BossMan, about my late project. I swear I put it on my calendar. Yes, there it is. The problem is that I forgot to set a reminder. No time to prepare now so I’ll wing it. Whatever BossMan says I’ll rephrase in a slightly different way. I hope I don’t sound like a moronic parrot. I’m sure I will. I’m feeling ill.
Coffee Break, 3:07
Whoever came up with “out of sight, out of mind” was brilliant. I’m at my favorite coffee shop a couple blocks south of the office. I’m safe here, except for the occasional homeless visitors. Once I took pity on a guy with no teeth and decided to buy him a drip coffee. I’ll never forget the look on his face when he said, “Sir, I only drink espresso.”
Running through Train Station, 5:26
Only two minutes before my train leaves the station. I’m resigned to not getting my seat. Typically I don’t like rushing but tonight I have a movie date with my wife. I can slow down and take the next train but will arrive late to the theater. I don’t enjoy searching for my wife in the dark. Big dilemma.
At Movie Theater, 7:34
I missed the earlier train and now I’m late for the movie. My wife is anxiously waiting for me to arrive. She texted that she’ll try to save a seat for me. “Try” is code for: you’ll soon be sitting in the first row alone with a neck ache.

The philosophy informally called “out of sight, out of mind” only works if your aim is to be out of a job. It’s easier to avoid a challenging or unpleasant situation than to stand firm. But we must if we are to move towards our big goals.
Here’s how to be courageous during difficult times:
Maintain Your Composure
It’s easy to run away from a situation that frightens you. The key is to remind yourself that external circumstances do not have power over you. It’s how you respond to your own thoughts that determine your actions. You are the one who makes this determination. No one can force you to act one way or another. Reserve the right to retain the power over your thoughts and actions.
Practice Mindfulness during Less Stressful Times
Find a quiet space. Close your eyes and bring your awareness to the thoughts running through your mind. Don’t try to act on them. Just watch them. Imagine that they are puffy clouds moving through a summer sky. Remind yourself that actual clouds move on their own accord. Watch your thoughts move through your mind. At first, it will be difficult because you’ll feel compelled to interact with them. Don’t quit. Your skills will improve with practice.
Stay Present
It’s only natural to be anxious during tough times. Your mind is skilled at this maneuver. When the going gets tough, the mind will wander. Daydreaming is not an effective strategy for getting things done. Maintain your awareness of what’s happening in the present moment. Don’t let your worries pull you away from action.
In Shower, 6:49
I’m late getting out of bed. Same as yesterday but worse. Got to make up time. I’ll skip my shave and risk looking like an ape. I believe there’s an office policy against bringing in animals. I need to shave in the shower. But there’s no mirror in there. Hmm, this is going to be interesting.
Running, 7:23
No time for anything. No coffee, no bagel, not even a mouthful of Cheerios. I have five minutes to catch a train that’s eight minutes away by foot. Go ape man go.
On Platform, 7:28
I’m huffing heavily like a wild animal. Lucky there is no one here to see me. Which is odd because the platform should be packed at this time. Is it possible that the one day I’m late is the one day the train arrived early? Yup, the stars have once again aligned against me.
At Desk, 9:54
I’m still winded from my five minute run. I’m over an hour late. However, no one noticed when I entered the office. All eyes were glued to their computers. I could’ve jumped from desk to desk and still not registered on anyone’s radar.
Helping, 1:34
A new employee has asked me to help him navigate the company’s intranet site. It’s complicated. During my first week here, I got lost in its jungle-like environment. It took me two months before I found the courage to enter again. He timed his request for assistance just right as I’m an ape man today.
To Subway, 5:37
There’s no way I’m rushing home tonight. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy being with my family. I even like my dog, except when he sits in my chair. When I shoo him off, he looks at me like he’s the king of the jungle. Oh, he’s got a big surprise coming to him tonight.
At Dinner, 7:11
My family and I like to eat in front of the television. Typically, we’ll watch reruns of MASH. You can’t beat surgeons trying to act jovial during wartime. Tonight, though, my wife asks if I want to watch something else. It took me a few moments to process her question. I realize I haven’t made a decision during dinner in years. I tell her to ask the dog as he’s sitting in my seat.
In Bed, 10:30
The book I’m reading is slow and monotonous. The plot is not compelling. I bet I could write a better book than this guy. I can call it “The ApeMan Cometh.” Ha ha. Who am I kidding? I don’t know the first thing about writing a book.

It’s easy to convince ourselves that everything in this world is the way it is because of us. Our ego loves to make us the center of attention. Of course, we’re the most important person in the room. How could it be any other way? Unfortunately, that’s not how the world works. Primarily because everyone else is doing exactly what we are: looking out for themselves first. When we realize this truth, we begin to understand what makes each person tick. We can empathize with them without judging. That’s an important skill whenever we have to interact with people. Which, as it turns out, is all the time.
