Introduction

Even though the word "aromatherapy" was not coined until the late 1920s, this kind of therapy was found many centuries earlier. The history of the use of essential oils traces back to at least a few thousand years, although human beings have used plants, herbs, etc. for thousands of years.

Aromatic plants have been used for centuries in both the East and the West for their medicinal, preservative, and joyful effects. Waters, oils, incense, resins, and ointments scented with botanicals were employed in religious rituals by the ancient Egyptians as early as 1500 BC. While some were used to improve a person's health or mood, fragrant compounds like frankincense and myrrh were utilized in religious and spiritual rituals.

There is evidence that the Chinese understood the advantages of herbal and aromatic medicines far earlier. Shen Nung's Pen Ts'ao (c. 2700-3000 BC) is the earliest known herbal treatise, cataloging over 200 plants.

Aromatic herbs were also utilized for healing in Ayurveda. People in India believe that the various essential oils, which have been used from time immemorial, were given to them by the gods themselves. Furthermore, the Vedas have detailed the many fragrant plants and their applications. As a result, people in India are well acquainted with the usage of essential oils.

Aromatherapy was utilized in India throughout the Middle Ages for seduction, healing, and treatment programs, among other things. Even today, it is used to force elephants to mate. To attract the male bull, the female is bathed in aromatic oils.

Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, a French chemist, coined the term "Aromatherapy" in a 1937 book on the subject. After being burnt in a laboratory explosion, he washed his hands with lavender essential oil. He noticed that his hands healed fast and left minimal scarring. His hands healed so well that he became passionate about the properties of essential oils, and is now recognized as the ‘father of modern aromatherapy.’ He later collaborated with many physicians to treat soldiers’ wounds using essential oils. Marguerite Maury, who emphasized the significance of essential oils in massage and as therapeutic agents capable of bringing about emotional changes, was mainly responsible for the development of holistic aromatherapy as it is practiced today.

How its Significance was Discovered?

Nowadays, the use of alternative and complementary approaches in conjunction with conventional therapy is gaining traction. Aromatherapy is a complementary treatment that uses essential oils as the primary therapeutic agent to treat a variety of illnesses. Various techniques are used to extract essential or volatile oils from the plant's flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots, fruits, and other components. It arose as a result of scientists deciphering the antibacterial and skin permeability characteristics of essential oils.

Pedanios Dioscorides, a Greek physician and surgeon whose famous herbal work ‘De Materia Medica (60 AD)’ served as the standard textbook for Western medicine for 1,500 years, wrote extensively on the therapeutic benefits of plant aromatics. The Medica had comprehensive information on over 500 plants as well as 4,740 different medical applications for them, including a whole section on aromatics.

Written records of herbal distillation date back to the first century AD, and in his works about 1000 AD, the renowned Arab physician and scientist Avicenna documented the distillation of rose oil from rose petals, as well as the therapeutic qualities of essential oils.

Aromatherapy was not established as a medical field in Europe until 1937, when French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé, the man who coined the word, released ‘Aromatherapie: Les Huiles essentielles, Hormones végétales.’ Gattefossé, who worked for a French perfumer, discovered the therapeutic qualities of lavender oil by accident after he sustained a serious burn while working and soaked it in the nearest available liquid, lavender oil.

French surgeon Jean Valnet used botanical aromatics as front-line therapy for injured soldiers during World War II in the late 20th century. In his 1964 book ‘Aromatherapie, traitement des maladies par les essences des plantes,’ he wrote about his use of essential oils and their therapeutic and antiseptic qualities, which promoted the use of essential oils for medical and psychiatric therapy across France. Later, French biochemist Mauguerite Maury popularized the cosmetic benefits of essential oils, and in 1977, Robert Tisserand published ‘The Art of Aromatherapy,’ the first English-language book on the subject, which introduced massage as an adjunct treatment to aromatherapy and sparked its popularity in the United Kingdom.

Modern Use of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy and essential oils have become increasingly popular in modern times, not only in the usage of aromatherapy massage and the purchase of pure essential oils but also in the extensive use of essential oils in the cosmetic, skincare, and pharmaceutical industries.

Aromatherapy is considered both an art and a science. It provides a variety of medical and psychological advantages, depending on the essential oil or oil combination and manner of application employed.

From the late 20th century to the 21st century, there has been a rising revival in the use of more natural goods, particularly essential oils, for medicinal, cosmetic, and aromatic value. The usage of essential oils has never stopped, although the scientific revolution has reduced their popularity and utility in daily life. Today's increasing knowledge of the dangers of synthetics, along with the increased availability of aromatherapy material in books and on the Internet, has rekindled interest in the use of essential oils.

Chamomile, lavender, rose, and tea tree are some of the most often utilized essential oils in the cosmetic and skin care industries. Aniseed oil, benzoin, bitter orange oil, cajuput oil, and peppermint are among the essential oils often utilized in the pharmaceutical business.

Analgesic, antimicrobial, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, astringent, sedative, antispasmodic, expectorant, diuretic, and sedative are some of the typical therapeutic characteristics of essential oils used in aromatherapy. Essential oils are used to treat a variety of symptoms and diseases, such as gastrointestinal discomfort, skin issues, menstruation pain and irregularities, stress-related conditions, mental disorders, circulation difficulties, respiratory infections, and wounds.

Essential oils work because they are made up of small fragrant molecules that are absorbed via the skin and lungs and then circulated throughout the body through the circulatory system. The impact of essential oils is influenced by our sense of smell; studies have shown that aromas affect mood, evoke emotions, and decrease stress and high blood pressure.

The fragrance of essential oils may evoke memories and associations, for example, someone who is sad may be immediately transported back to a pleasant summer spent in the garden surrounded by beautiful flowers such as roses by inhaling rose essential oil.

The way essential oils operate is also scientifically proven. They are made up of naturally occurring chemical components including alcohols, esters, phenols, and aldehydes. The major component of lavender is linalyl acetate, whereas that of Roman chamomile is isobutyl angelate, both of which are esters. Esters have anti-inflammatory and sedative qualities, while lavender and chamomile are well-known for their soothing and relaxing abilities. Tea tree and eucalyptus oils, for example, contain natural anti-viral effects and have been proven to be effective against the herpes simplex (cold sore) virus.

This was a quick overview and history of Aromatherapy. Ahead in the book, we’ll discuss various aspects of Aromatherapy, as well as the finest techniques you may use to reap the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits.
