Foreword
We live in a world fascinated by diets. Various fad diets create headlines, claiming to be the most effective method to reduce weight. However, in a world where we are continuously bombarded with such latest and best diets, it may be tough to focus fully and recognize what is genuinely useful and effective for healthy weight loss. Most of the fancy diets that promise to help you lose weight quickly are not sustainable in the long term.
It makes us wonder whether there’s a way to lose weight and keep it off without getting out of balance or jumping from diet to diet, only to relapse and start the cycle again? Well, there is, and it has been tried and tested for the past 5,000 years. Some easy ancient Ayurveda practices might assist you in losing and maintaining weight healthily.
Yoga’s sister science is Ayurveda, an ancient system of healing founded in India. It aims to avoid disease and promote health, balance, and longevity through simple rules that adhere to nature’s natural cycles, seasons, and time of day. Ayurveda is derived from a Sanskrit phrase that means “life knowledge.” It is about restoring total wholeness and vitality—reclaiming optimum health via long-term improvements that benefit our entire lives. Each step forward is a step toward a more lively, richer sense of being.
Ayurveda recommends several easy yet effective remedies to help you lose weight healthily. According to it, being overweight may indicate an overabundance of Kapha Dosha. Being overweight may aggravate Kapha in the body even more; consequently, it is critical to balance this dosha by adhering to particular guidelines. This health strategy Ayurveda provides to do so does not prioritize short-term gains, so you won’t have to starve yourself or restrict the range of things you may eat. Instead, it focuses on adhering to a simple concept that will not only help you lose weight but also promote overall health—balance.
Ayurvedic weight loss is always unfailing, consistent, and dependable, as well as incredibly simple to implement. Ayurvedic weight loss methods may naturally lead us towards holistic and healthy living with no artificial or processed foods or fad diets that damage us more than they help.
Ayurveda also emphasizes nutritious diets, exercise, stress reduction, and enough sleep. There is a substantial amount of research to back up these behaviors and their importance in weight loss and healthy living. Choosing to live an Ayurvedic lifestyle will enhance your health and make you more aware of what you eat, how you move, and how you feel.

Why Lose Weight Other than Cosmetic Purpose?
Losing weight for the sake of looking “beautiful” isn’t necessarily the sole purpose of doing it. The benefits of maintaining a healthy weight extend well beyond increased energy and reduced garment sizes. You are more likely to experience a greater quality of life if you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.
Obesity is the most important reason for losing excess weight. It is a widespread health issue that affects millions of individuals worldwide. It may be caused by a variety of reasons, including poor dietary habits, eating disorders, underlying disease, certain medicines, a sedentary lifestyle, anxiety, and inherited factors.
According to Ayurvedic medicine, one of the primary causes of obesity is an imbalance in the Kapha Dosha. According to Ayurveda, those with a strong Kapha constitution are more prone to acquire weight than those with a Pitta or Vata-dominant constitution. As a result, persons who have an imbalance in their Kapha energy must strive extra hard to prevent accumulating excess weight.
What Exactly is Obesity?
It is characterized by a rise in the amount of adipose tissue in the thighs, abdomen, and chest, where bodily vitality falls and health suffers. Obesity, often known as abnormal weight gain, is a widespread metabolic illness in Europe, the United States, and emerging nations such as India. It is one of the earliest illnesses or ailments known to man.
Obesity has been classified as Sthoulya or Medhoroga in Ayurveda, a Medo Dhatu condition documented in old books such as Veda and Maharishi Charak Samhita. Obesity, or Medoroga, is one of eight unpleasant states of the body mentioned in ancient Ayurvedic writings as Nindya Prakriti. Obese people have excessively sterile fats or Medos, which malnourish the body’s other important Dhatus. Obesity occurs when fat metabolism is impeded, followed by a rise in Kapha.
According to Acharya Charaka (an ancient Ayurvedic scholar), being too obese or too lean are the most undesirable qualities because obese people inherit eight defects—short lifespan, constricted movement, impotence, debility, foul odor, profuse sweating, and excessive hunger and thirst. A person who, due to extensive fat accumulation, cannot work as well as disfigured with pendulous buttocks, belly, and breasts is called “Atisthoola.” Atisthoulya is the medical term for this condition.
Causes
Obesity develops when there is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories spent, i.e. when calories taken exceed calories spent during exercise or daily routine activities. According to Ayurvedic principles, the primary reason is an improper lifestyle and dietary choices or behaviors.
Among the reasons are:
Family Heritage and Influences: Genes have an important impact on the body’s ability to turn food into energy, control hunger, and burn calories during exercise. Family members also have similar eating and exercise patterns. Thus, obesity can be a result of family heritage and influences.
Lifestyle Choices:
High Food Consumption: Eating plenty, particularly of Kapha-inducing foods such as those high in fat or those that take longer to digest, like meat, as well as sweet, salty, or greasy meals.
Unhealthy Diet: Obesity is caused by a high-calorie diet, a lack of fruits and vegetables, junk or processed food, and an enormous portion.
Liquid Calories: High-calorie alcohol, sugared soft drinks, and so forth.
Sedentary Lifestyle: Daytime sleep, reduced physical activity, and more sedentary activities such as prolonged use of computers, mobile phones, and tablet displays.
Certain Diseases and Medications: Obesity may be caused by diseases such as Prader-Will syndrome, Cushing syndrome, and arthritis, which cause a reduction in physical activity. Antidepressants, seizure drugs, diabetic meds, antipsychotic medications, steroids, and beta-blockers are examples of medicines.
Age: Obesity may develop at any age, even young children, but as we get older, hormonal changes and a less active lifestyle raise the risk.
Pregnancy: Weight gain is typical throughout pregnancy, and some women struggle to reduce weight after giving birth, leading to obesity.
Quitting Smoking: Many individuals use food to deal with the withdrawal symptoms of smoking, which causes weight gain and ultimately leads to obesity. However, quitting smoking has a higher health advantage.
Inadequate Sleeping Habits: Not getting enough sleep or sleeping too much might induce hormonal changes that increase appetite.
Stress: When confronted with a stressful circumstance, people often seek high-calorie foods.
How Do You Know If You’re Obese?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a basic metric for weight and height that is often used to define humans as overweight or obese. It is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters (kg/m²). Obesity is often diagnosed when the BMI exceeds 30.
Symptoms
Among Adults:
The accumulation of excess body fat, especially around the waist.
Breathing difficulties.
Excessive sweating.
Snoring.
Skin issues that cause moisture build-up in the skin creases.
Tiredness (mild to extreme).
Pain (common in the back and joints).
Psychological effects include low self-esteem, depression, social isolation, and so on.
Adolescents and Children:
Deposition of fatty tissue (particularly in the breast area).
Stretch marks appear on the hips and back.
Acanthosis nigricans (dark velvety skin around the neck and other areas).
Shortness of breath with physical activity.
Obstructive sleep apnea.
Constipation.
Gastrointestinal Reflux.
Low self-esteem.
Early puberty in females, late puberty in males.
Orthopedic problems, such as flat feet or dislocated hips.
Obesity Management in Ayurveda
Weight gain is a cyclical process, according to Ayurveda. Obesity, like any other condition, begins with one’s eating and lifestyle choices, which tend to suppress the Agni, or digestive fire, of the body. This leads to poor food digestion and a rise in toxin levels in the body.
In the long run, higher toxin or Ama levels in the body disrupt normal metabolic processes, leading to the production of extra fatty tissue. This also interferes with the creation of other critical issues, such as bone tissues or Asthi Dhatu. Improper tissue layers diminish Kapha’s functioning and raise Medo Dhatu, or fats, in the body.
Ama also clogs the physiological channels, generating Vata imbalance, which activates the digestive fire, resulting in an increase in hunger and contributing to obesity. The fundamental cause of obesity, on the other hand, maybe attributed to an inappropriate or unbalanced Medo Dhatu, which is generated as a result of poor fat metabolism or Medo Dhavagni Mandya.
Obesity therapy in Ayurveda is not only concerned with losing weight but also with correcting metabolic processes by removing Ama and excess lipids to manage the function of Kapha while minimizing Vata aggravation. Proper metabolism is required since it strengthens the tissues and increases the digestive fire. Ayurveda also recommends yoga and nutrition to help with weight loss and obesity management. The typical Ayurvedic therapy for obesity consists of losing excess weight and maintaining long-term healthy habits (which we’ll go over ahead in the book).
Some Other Reasons Why You Should Lose Weight
It Helps with Breathing
Obesity-related respiratory disorders such as obesity hypoventilation syndrome may be avoided by losing weight. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, this condition is caused by excess fat on the chest, neck, or belly. Breathlessness, weariness, snoring, and headaches are some of the symptoms.
Lessens Asthma and Allergy Symptoms
At first, weight loss and allergies seem to have no connection. However, medical experts believe that one has a direct influence on the other. Being overweight relates to exacerbated asthma and allergies in certain people. It puts a strain on the adrenal glands, which are involved in asthma and allergy management. Being overweight puts a load on the respiratory system and might aggravate asthma symptoms.
Foot Pain is Relieved
Less weight implies less strain on the part of your body that bears most of the strain—your feet. A recent study of people who had bariatric surgery and lost an average of 90 pounds discovered that their symptoms of foot discomfort decreased by 83%.
Provides Glowing Skin
You may have begun your healthy lifestyle with the sole aim of losing weight, but an unexpected benefit of your weight-loss journey will emerge in the shape of beautiful skin as you strive on this journey.
Being overweight can affect your skin in many ways. Nutritional issues are known to affect skin elasticity and color, and diets heavy in carbs and sugar may induce skin pallor and skin tags. Dark circles around the eyes may be caused by iron deficiency, protein anemia, diabetes, or several stressors. Restricting such things and losing excess weight aids in the detoxification of our bodies, resulting in clear and glowing skin.
Improves Your Memory
If remembering people’s names has been a challenge for you for most of your life, the additional weight you have been lugging around might be to blame. The advantages of losing weight extend well beyond the physical. Losing weight and being more active increases brainpower significantly. According to research, when your overall bodyweight is lowered, your memory improves. So, not only will you feel cheerful all the time (endorphins!), but you’ll also remember what you actually needed to accomplish today, tomorrow, and the following day.
In one study, women fared better on memory tests after losing weight than they did before. Why? Brain scans revealed that once the women lost weight, there was more activity during memory formation and less activity during memory recall, implying that carrying extra pounds may make it more difficult for the brain to work efficiently.
Reverses Type 2 Diabetes
Diabetes is caused by a variety of factors. However, obesity is a major risk factor for acquiring type 2 diabetes. This problem occurs when your body does not properly react to insulin. As a result, your blood glucose (also known as blood sugar) levels rise, and you become even more insulin resistant.
If you are obese, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight for your height and body type will help you avoid the condition. Weight loss, according to research, may also have a significant influence on the treatment of type 2 diabetes. According to the American Heart Association, if you are in the high-risk group, losing 5-7% of your body weight may lower your risk of type 2 diabetes by 58%. It has the potential to reduce insulin resistance and lower blood glucose levels, both of which are significant aspects of disease management.
In a recent study of 424 type 2 diabetic patients who had gastric bypass surgery, 83 percent were able to correct their disease’s symptoms. A second, smaller trial found that 11 type 2 diabetes patients on a strictly calorie-restricted diet might return to normal blood sugar levels and insulin secretion activity in 7 days. If you have type 2 diabetes, one of the most significant weight-loss advantages may be correcting your illness and preventing future problems. You can’t excuse it for motivation to lose weight.
Relieves Terrible Allergies
Excess weight might aggravate allergy symptoms in certain people. Because extra weight may strain your respiratory system, any difficulty breathing due to allergies can further increase your symptoms. If you lose weight, you may breathe more clearly when allergy season arrives.
