Introduction
Our generation is usually always going through a tough phase. Late nights at work, early meetings, and hectic social life are just a few things that add to our everyday stress. But the main cause for our distress is the lack of a regular schedule. Our forefathers never had to worry about stress since they maintained a disciplined Dinacharya that they followed faithfully. This helps keep the doshas in balance, controls the body’s biological cycle, promotes discipline and happiness, and reduces stress.
Most of us follow everything daily, but the manner we follow it makes a difference. Starting the day with a scowl makes the day miserable. In the quest to complete the task given, today’s generation doesn’t devote much attention to his/her personal health. Many a time missing meals, not responding to nature calls at the right time, sedentary lifestyle, racing to bed soon after dinner, and night shifts and insomnia, etc.
A lack of routine can also cause many lifestyle disorders such as obesity, hypertension and stroke, diabetes, coronary heart disease, dyslipidemia, cancer, arthritis, anxiety, insomnia, constipation, indigestion, hyperacidity, gastric ulcer, and early manifestations of aging like greying of hair, wrinkles, depletion of energy levels, etc. Diseases produced due to unsanitary circumstances include Infections of buccal mucosa, teeth, gingiva, skin infections, infection of the ear and nasal cavity, eye infection, urinary tract infection, genital infections, infection of the scalp, etc.
Simple adjustments in one’s lifestyle may prevent these numerous health risks and more. Just as unhealthy lifestyles are the main causes of modern-day diseases, balanced lifestyles may result in an enhanced sense of well-being that is essential to optimum health. Health management is free and pleasant while illness management is extremely expensive and terrible.
Thus, Dinacharya should be used by every person irrespective of their body type, age, gender, or health condition. Even though our requirements are diverse, everyone will benefit from pursuing a healthy lifestyle.
A daily routine is essential for bringing about a dramatic transformation in the body, mind, and consciousness. Routine aids in the establishment of equilibrium in one's constitution. It also helps with digestion, absorption, and assimilation, as well as building self-esteem, discipline, tranquility, happiness, and longevity.
Whether we want to believe it or not, our daily routines and habits (Dinacharya) indeed have an important influence on our long-term health. Every decision we make during the day affects how we look and feel—the foods we consume, the lifestyle choices we make, and even the subtle thoughts we have. When it comes to making health-related choices, it may be difficult to know where to start. It takes awareness, discipline, and commitment to develop healthy habits that persist, which is why embarking on an Ayurvedic journey and self-care routine may be the greatest thing you can ever do for yourself.
What is Dinacharya?
Ayurveda, which translates to "life knowledge," is a true gift to all humanity. It teaches us to slow down and reflect, reconnect with our bodily knowledge, tune into the earth's circadian rhythms, and develop deeper self-love and understanding. It is a5,000-year-old medicinal system that enables us to take control of our health by offering simple practices that may be followed over time to guarantee a happier, healthier life. Dinacharya is an Ayurveda term that refers to daily routine guidelines that teach people how to live a better, happier, and longer life while avoiding many illnesses.
By regulating your biological clock and promoting a healthy lifestyle, an Ayurvedic daily routine may help you preserve balance and harmony in your body and nature. It also aids in appropriate meal digestion, absorption, and assimilation. The discipline you do daily boosts your self-esteem, provides pleasure, and increases lifespan.
Dinacharya, when followed regularly, contribute to a life of optimum health via regularity, detoxification, and nutrition. It encourages self-care via several daily activities, according to Ayurveda. It regularises our biological clock and makes us more self-aware by putting us in touch with nature. Your health will benefit in a variety of ways if you practice this routine daily with serious interest and commitment.
Dinacharya is formed from two words—‘Dina,’ which means day, and ‘Acharya,’ which means activity. By incorporating Dinacharya's basic self-care practices into our life, we will be armed with the skills we need to foster balance, joy, and overall long-term health. We can fulfill our Dharma, our fundamental life purpose, when we are well and balanced, enabling us to feel our best and share our strengths with the world.
We can explore Dinacharya and integrate its components into our life with:
Mindfulness and meditation for improved sleep, emotional balance, and a calmer mind.Yoga and pranayama for stress reduction, relaxation, and naturally lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels.Self-care activities for enhanced physical, mental, and emotional well-being, hormonal balance, and lifespan.Herbal treatments, oils, and dietary habits for attractive and healthy skin.Ayurvedic practices and treatments for inflammation reduction, increased energy, and healing.Detoxifying spices, herbs, and other nutritional ingredients to improve digestion and organ function.Spiritual activities that connect the body, mind, and spirit, facilitating internal healing.
So, do you wish to synchronize your schedule with nature's rhythm? Do you wish to be disease-free for the rest of your life? Do you want to live a longer, better, and happier life? With this book, I'll show you how to align with nature's rhythm every day so you may remain healthy and happy for the rest of your life. You will be able to overcome all kinds of mental and physical illnesses in your life. The best part is that these suggestions are centered on Ayurvedic principles and are easy to implement.
This book is perfect for anybody seeking simple, all-encompassing methods to live a more genuine and balanced life. You'll discover techniques and ideas to help you stay calm, balanced, and joyful.
Significance of Dinacharya and Daily Cycles
We all strive to live a healthy lifestyle by integrating healthy habits into our daily routines. Who doesn't want to live freely, without having to worry about health issues? However, in modern culture, it has become difficult to balance health and work. Following Dinacharya and living an Ayurvedic lifestyle is a simple answer to all health-related concerns and the key to creating a harmonic balance between mind, body, and soul.
Dinacharya, when followed regularly, is a more powerful medication than an occasional remedy. Dinacharya teaches healthy behaviors by re-acquainting the body with the natural cycles of the day.
We may more readily support the body's natural cycles and healing capabilities by creating a routine that "goes with the flow" of these elemental energies. While Ayurveda has stressed the significance of maintaining a connection with nature for millennia, western scientists are just now starting to grasp how critical it is for the body to maintain a connection with nature's rhythms.
Dinacharya maintains and connects us to our circadian rhythms, often known as the internal body clock. It teaches us the optimum times for our daily routines such as waking up, exercising, bathing, meditation, prayer, eating, studying, working, relaxing, and sleeping. This is required to maintain a healthy body, mind, and soul.
The detachment from circadian rhythms is referred to as chronodisruption. Poor cognitive function, mood and sleep problems, diabetes, obesity, daytime lethargy, decreased performance, drug addiction, heart disease, and certain cancers have all been related to it.
According to Ayurveda, two cycles of change occur on any given day—the sun cycle and the moon cycle—and they are linked with the Ayurvedic body type or doshas (Vata, Pitta, or Kapha).
Daily Cycles and Dinacharya
Ayurveda Dinacharya is divided into two daily cycles:
Sun Cycle
Moon Cycle
There are 4-hour intervals of Vata Dosha, Pitta Dosha, and Kapha Dosha energies, commonly known as Ayurvedic body types, throughout these two cycles. These energies are likewise present in our bodies, although in different degrees of intensity and combination. As a result, avoid activities that exacerbate the cycle of these three energies.
The 1st cycle runs from sunrise to sunset (6:00 am to 6:00 pm).
Kapha—6:00-10:00 am
Pitta—10:00 am-2:00 pm
Vata—2:00-6:00 pm
The second cycle runs from Sunset to Sunrise (6:00 pm to 6:00 am).
Kapha—6:00-10:00 pm
Pitta—10:00 pm–2:00 am
Vata—2:00-6:00 am
Vata Dosha is prominent in the early morning (between 2-6 am) and in the afternoon (between 2-6 pm). The Vata Dosha peaks between these hours. Because the Vata Dosha is made up of air and ether elements, there is space and mobility at this time of day that may be utilized for creative endeavors and problem-solving. Allow yourself to think outside the box, since the energy of Vata may lead you to a new solution.
Vata is light, creative, and contemplative by nature. It controls the transitional times of the day and enables expansive thought to flourish.
Vata provides us with a time of receptivity in the early morning, allowing us to direct our attention inwardly and engage more profoundly with our spiritual activities. Getting up early in the morning offers a variety of physical and spiritual advantages. This is the best time of day to get up since everything is calm and you can prepare for the day peacefully.
Pitta is made up of fire and water and is renowned for its transformational ability. It is most prominent between 10 am-2 pm, then again between 10 pm-2 am. Morning Dinacharya should be finished before 10 am, according to Ayurveda, to track the movement of the doshas throughout the day. Pitta Dosha is believed to be the strongest between the hours of 10 am-2 pm; therefore, this is an ideal time to harness the heated, go-getter energy of Pitta and be productive with work, housework, errands, and so on. These are also the hours when the digestive fire is at its most, therefore we should eat our biggest meal of the day at this time. It is the best time of day for Agni to digest and absorb food.
In summary, whatever your most important activities are for the day, these are the best hours to do them since you will have sustained mental concentration and clarity due to Pitta Dosha’s characteristics.
The internal organs perform the majority of their intensive cleaning and regenerating during the Pitta hours of the night. We should ideally be resting during these hours since this allows our bodies to repair themselves.
Kapha is made up of water and earth components. It predominates between 6-10 am and 6-10 pm, bringing with it a sense of hefty, grounding energy. To prevent a heavy, sluggish sensation upon rising, it is suggested that we wake before the transition into Kapha time of day around 6 am.
Kapha is extremely stable and influences how we present ourselves in the world. As a result, the early hours of Kapha are ideal for doing more concentrated work. The evening hours of 6-8 pm are ideal for a stroll in nature or a moderate yoga session such as Restorative or Yin Yoga to wind down your day. At this time, you will wish to flow with the energy of Kapha Dosha, yielding to emotions of exhaustion after your long and busy day. There is no need to push yourself to accomplish more at this time; instead, ground yourself and gradually prepare your body for rest.
The Kapha evening hours are excellent for calming down before a good night's sleep. Meals should be light and simple to digest throughout the Kapha hours of the day.
The chart below shows how we can organize our days in accordance with the sun and moon cycles, as well as the natural rhythms of the doshas.
