THIS is a photographic journal of an epic 11,200km / 6,956 mile road trip around South Africa undertaken by Mark Liprini in a Classic Mini Minor in March 2014.
In order to see the “out of the way” places, Mark planned to use as many backroads as possible. To do this you would think Mark would have used a suitable 4WD vehicle. However, in search of a challenge Mark decided to use his trusty 1982 Classic Mini affectionately named "Pumba" after a character in The Lion King® because the antenna on the car's rear which sticks up like a warthog's tail when it runs.
Mark is a fulltime pilot with Missionary Aviation Fellowship (MAF). He is based at Lanseria Airport, just north of Johannesburg, and can be found flying missionaries, medical supplies and cargo into most Southern African countries with the odd foray into more Northern African countries like the Sudan, Kenya, Chad or Tanzania.
When Mark was asked "Why undertake such an epic journey?" He replied with the all-time classic
"BECAUSE IT'S THERE!"

Departure Point - Johannesburg
For the first two hours out of Jozi (Johannesburg), this was pretty much the weather. Overtaking trucks was amazing - my windshield is exactly in line with the sideways wash from their massive wheels. To use a pilot’s speech, this was IFR, Cat IIIA for each overtaking.
Petrusburg
A Northern Cape "McGyver" in Petrusburg, about to do a patch job with a piece of metal plate, two clamps and some Gungum . He did a great job, got me all the way to Kimberly.
Ooh! This tickles a wee bit!!
At Noise Boys in Kimberly.
If it didn't leak oil ... even after a major overhaul .. it just wouldn't be a true Mini.
A very interesting place to visit.
After 780 km through enough rain to make Noah nostalgic, two stops for a broken exhaust pipe, MANY fuel stops ( I only have a 32 litre/7 gal. tank) and meeting a couple of fascinating people en route, I finally ended up sleeping at Orania. Google it people.
ORANIA is a South African town located along the Orange River in the arid Karoo region of the Northern Cape province.
The aim of the town is to create a stronghold for Afrikaans and the Afrikaner identity by keeping their language and culture alive. Anyone who defines themselves as an Afrikaner and identifies with Afrikaner ethnicity is welcome in Orania. In 2004 Orania introduced its own currency, the Ora. Seventy businesses are located in Orania.
This morning’s exercise was to replace this wee fuel hose that lives deep down between the engine and the firewall. When done your back is broken, knuckles skinned, and head been banged on the bonnet a dozen times. However you don't feel this pain coz by the time you are done you are well and truly high on fumes. Great design feature.
Serious .. a monument to the venerable Koeksister - in Orania. Spotted it this morning on the way out of town.
A koeksister (or koe'sister) derives from the Dutch word koekje, which translates to "cookie". There are two popular versions of this South African syrup-coated doughnut: an Afrikaner version which is a twisted or braided shape (like a plait) and a Cape Malay version which is a spicy treat finished off with a sprinkling of coconut. It is prepared by deep-frying plaited dough rolls in oil, then dipping the fried dough into cold sugar syrup or honey. Koeksisters are very sticky and sweet and taste like honey.
