Being Wakeful
Section 2: With Quranic Light
Have you ever wondered about this? Could it be because it is a design? This body you think you possess was manufactured inside another human body, afloat in the dark, by the ultimate designer. Your lifetime is too short to even count the details of this human body. It is only one of the countless designs roaming this planet, which is one of the dots in one of the countless galaxies out there.
Fingernails. The fingernails remove ailments from hands. It is the mercy and blessing of the designer that he removed pain from this part of the body.
Wounds cause pain. Imagine an injured cat that comes to you but doesn’t let you dress the wound. It causes pain. Silly, right? Yet we do the same thing when we don’t pray from our heart. When we don’t discuss our innermost fears and concerns with our sustainer!
What do you think prayers can do?
Don’t you see how difficult it is to approach someone who attains a little power or status? How frequently can you initiate a conversation with any president? Yet the Supreme Being, with infinite power over everything in the universe, has allowed you to call him as many times as you like, regardless of the state you are in!
It does not stop here. Prayers have been given a status of worship! God can’t be thanked enough for this, even if we try thanking him till the end of time!
But then thanking by words is just one form of the act. True thanks is via action. It is by using the blessings in a way that the provider of the blessing wants. Even the pain and suffering can be a blessing. The criteria for something to be good is simple: anything that brings you closer to God is good.
On the other hand, with pain, things can easily go wrong.
Seeking refuge in the wrong place. But anything can be helpful, right? Wrong. Especially what can’t control its own interests.
You may seek money to cure pain caused by lack of opportunity. This wealth itself is not bad; love for it is. Money itself does not have the power to decide what’s best for you. It is a tool and a means, not an end. Money solves problems but it lacks the ability to bring peace. It is not the solution to every problem. Balance is required, along with something else.
A human needs other humans. Isolation can be a huge pain and fame is not the magic bullet to deal with isolation. Once a persona gains wide recognition, it can very easily turn into a glorified prison.
What is expected from you, what you want to do, and what you need to do to attain your target will almost never be the same thing. It is the equivalent of a lifetime of paralysis. All this attention does not know what to do with you. It is not the solution to every pain. Being seen by someone specific is necessary.
Authority over others can be necessary. Authority over others can be toxic. Things like these don’t alter you. They simply unveil what you truly are. Usually, every person with power wants the same thing; more power. That’s numbness. That’s blindness. That’s clearly not something which could look after its own well-being, let alone yours.
No, but you should not make them the aim of your life either. These can all be the means towards the target, not the target itself!
The right measure is needed; neither excess, nor deficiency. The point is, it isn’t wrong to want them. Not unless they are in conflict with what God wants. He is the true sustainer and owner of everything, calling the shots.
Imagine this. There is something that you want. On the other hand there is something that God wants. If they are in conflict, what do you think is going to happen?
The best we can do is to align our desires with the will of God. It isn’t easy at all. It requires a great deal of self-control and patience. But look at the other option. Standing up against what God wants will lead to endless and fruitless struggle, forever.
In the end nothing will happen except what God wants. The only way we can gain success is with submission to him and by exercising patience.
Writer: So you are going to the future again with this?
Narrator: Actually, I was thinking of taking you back to the past, way back. Simpler times might help get the point across.
The strong boy was growing up. It was time to make his father proud. Hunting something exquisite would gain him the recognition. Deciding what to hunt would be a challenge itself. Mediocre targets existed. He was aiming high. He was also completely lost until the moment he laid eyes on it and something snapped.
The hunter crouched with his spear pointed at the hunted. Small, inaudible, steps towards the hunted lying on the ground. His grin went from ear to ear as he was about to attack and begin a lifetime of success!
AAARGGHHHH! He jumped on the hunted, but lost him. He was on top as it escaped. It completely changed its shape and evaded quickly! It took him a mere minute to comprehend what had happened, but until then it was long gone.
The world lost its meaning. All that he could think of was the hunted. He could not tell anyone what has happened. He found it again. Same story, but this time he was ready to run!
It was fast and ran like a river flowing at full speed. His legs had strength too, but it showed something more incredible. The hunted walked over trees at the same speed as land. He was left panting with amazement. The hunted was a formidable opponent.
These encounters kept happening. He was just glad there were no witnesses. After this happened more times than he could count, things took a dark turn. His life became meaningless and he just kept walking like a zombie. On such a day of the new normal, an old man approached him.
Old Man: Why are you upset boy?
Hunter: Something is missing, and I am stuck. I don’t know how to fix it.
Old Man: That is visible in secret hunts.
Hunter: OH!
Old Man: Again, why are you upset?
Hunter: I can achieve anything. I want to hunt this creature. But it evades. And I can’t talk about it!
Old Man: Can you identify what exactly it is?
Hunter (with tears): The emptiness of this hollow chase.
Old Man: You are not alone. Everyone does this! 10,000 years after the ice age, people will still be doing this, in a different form.
Hunter: What do you mean?
Old Man: You will never attain what you are chasing because it is… just a shadow.
Hunter: What?
Old Man: It is a shadow of a bird that you have been after. You need to chase the bird, not its shadow!
That piece of information penetrated into his core instantly. Days passed, and the boy changed his strategy. His internal frustrations began plummeting. Life started to make sense. Goal was the bird now, and everything else fell into place around it!
The End!!!
Narrator:… And that concludes this story? I would have rather--
Writer: What if I told you that the reader has been involved in the modern equivalent of the same hunt?
Narrator: SERIOUSLY?!
Writer: The sustenance in the shadow.
Narrator: A shadow of what?
Writer: Its creator.
Narrator: What does that mean?
Writer: We have been chasing respect, wealth, power, fame, and every material thing there is, but not the one who is the creator, and true owner, of all such shadows!
Narrator: Who would that be?
God!
Narrator: Alright! Heavy stuff! You need to loosen up, I guess. Sit back and relax. Watch some TV maybe?
Writer: Do you have any recommendations?
Narrator: Would you try anime? How about Death Note? Isn’t it world-famous?
Writer: Yeah, I could give it a shot.
A few episodes later
Writer: Okay narrator, you're gonna wanna hear this
Death Note is not an ordinary notebook because “anyone whose name is written in the Death Note shall die within minutes*(T&C apply).” In the story It belongs to the Shinigami, the god of death, but out of boredom he drops it into the human world, where it is picked up by another bored person and protagonist 'Light Yagami'. His use of this power to grant death abundantly brings into play the antagonist, the ever-mysterious, sugar loving, weirdly sitting, constantly snacking, and publicly unseen ‘ just 'L' ’
Why am I saying something everybody knows?
Just. ‘Justice’, that word triggered a nano-second mind trip. Light wants to kill every person that deserves to die so earth can be a better place. The best use of his power to kill untraceably.
L wants to find this Light a.k.a. Kira and stop him because killing people is wrong. They play a fascinating game of ‘I know that he knows that I know he knows…’ over what is possibly the most interesting debate on a death penalty.
Here is a point of spike in interest, at the end of episode two both L and Light utter the exact same words, ‘I am justice.’
Two rights are wrong!
Shinigami drops the notebook; light gets it and sta--
Hang on! This Shinigami is a god of death that is afraid to die! He has a hack in the timing of death that adds humans' life to his. He lives in a realm that is rotting because there is nothing interesting to do.
We are standing at a conclusion of ‘two right paths’ because of the Shinigami premise. Call me crazy but it is clear that God, the one true God, is beyond such dependencies on humans. This is where we see how the one true God, the absolute ruler is the pure one and the source of peace.
He is the guardian and the maker of order. He is the sustainer and the reliever. It is he who is in the truest sense, 'just'. The fault lies in us not being able to see things this way at the right time.
The philosophy of fiction can be very useful in identifying gaps and making a point! Stories can be a powerful tool for improving real lives!
Death Note is a brilliant source of entertainment. It should be watched, and re-watched, but with acceptance of a fact. That a realm of two people claiming to be 'just' becomes possible with a flaw. That is when you break a chunk of God’s power and give it to a non-God!
That might sound confusing, but there is a key; you. Being wakeful shows you where justice is. If you ever feel lost in looking for the right path, just look within yourself. The inner voice is a name for the compass within you that always points in the right direction.
Human beings, via their divine nature, have already been given the sense of right and wrong. But they also have their animal instincts. They just have to make sure to listen to that divine nature clearly. We usually end up blinded by the animal nature within us.
It is important to distinguish between Animal Nature (Tabiyat) and Divine Nature (Fitrat) in a human being. We can think of this world as a womb for the soul. But it goes deeper than that.
Look at how a baby evolves. The body needs resources to grow up, and isn’t strong enough to get them. The child cries and gets what s/he needs. So now there is a clear line between ‘self’ and ‘rest of the world’. Then ‘I’ versus others becomes ‘us’ at some point.
Eventually there is the ‘us’ versus ‘them’ debate and most people don’t outgrow that stage. It is normal. This process shows the ability to evolve internally. The problem occurs when the ‘false sense of I-ness’ is being mistakenly associated with the person’s true self.
What if we are not our body?
In the head? Or chest? Elbow? Knee? Where is it in your body?
The point is, it is not the body that has a soul. It is the soul that has a body. But in order for this body to physically survive in the real world, it needs a management system. Something to link the two together in this physical realm.
That is the false sense of I-ness; Ego.
Is ego always bad? Or is it a bad thing only if it oversteps or overstays? We can try to exhaust possibilities and understand every detail of how it works. Or stay in the scope of this book and take a small look at the big picture.
Freud’s concepts are widely known. However you are not in a psychology textbook. Get ready to catch B.U.L.B.s of Ego along with Id (Intellect) and Superego (Core) can be used to deliver much deeper meanings.
I know, I know. Generalisations, maybe. Hasty, never!
Ego creates a false sense of I-ness, in order to sustain itself and the body. But the intellect and the core play different roles. Intellect’s job is to process what the ego gathers from the senses, and distinguish between right and wrong. Animals have not been given intellect, which is exactly why things are not forbidden (Haram) or permitted (Halal) for them.
My false sense of self likes pizza, the pleasure and sensation of all that mouthwatering cheese, but due to having too much of it the stomach is in a bad shape. The ego still likes pizza, and it wants more of it, even when it would cause damage.
The intellect steps in and convinces it to swallow bitter pills that the ego does not want. Intellect convinces the ego that not taking them would cause damage.
