About the Author
INTRODUCTION
Anxiety and depression are types of mood disorders.
Depression causes feelings of sadness, hopelessness and reduced energy, among other things. Anxiety, on the other hand, creates feelings of nervousness, worry or dread.
Although they are different mood disorders, it is possible to have both at the same time. Agitation and restlessness can be symptoms of both depression and anxiety.
It is normal to have anxiety or depression from time to time. But when these feelings happen often and interfere with your daily activities, a disorder has likely set in and treatment is required.
Chapter One
ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION
Depression is a persistent feeling of sadness; you have no energy and lose interest in activities you once enjoyed. Depressed persons often have thoughts of harming or hurting themselves; some of which could be suicidal.
Anxiety, on the other hand, has to do with fear or worry that you can’t control. It can occur during daily activities or at night, depending on the type of anxiety.
The difference between depression and anxiety is in their symptoms.
Anxiety and depression are common and often happen together. About 60% of people with anxiety also have symptoms of depression, and vice versa. One of these disorders can worsen or prolong the symptoms of the other.
The same genes may be responsible for both conditions. Anxiety and depression can also stem from the same brain cell, structure or process. Stress and childhood trauma are also triggers of anxiety and depression.
Overlapping Symptoms of Anxiety/Depression
Fatigue or decrease in energy level.
Moodiness.
Inability to relax, focus and concentrate.
Irritability or anger.
Unexplained aches and pains.
Changes in sleep patterns, lack of sleep or oversleeping.
