PREFACE

One of the world’s most inspirational and dynamic leaders, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, is also one of the most original thinkers of our times. Emphasising practical wisdom, he has transformed millions of lives all over the globe. His talks are a blend of knowledge and guidance, delivered with simplicity and humour—a powerful, unbeatable combination that touches lives and hearts wherever heard.

Since time immemorial, every great Master, in his turn, has shared the universal message of Truth in the language most apt to the time, people and environment. It is with great joy that we offer this superb collection of unique, penetrative talks, given over a period of time by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on one of the greatest Masters of all time—Buddha, the ultimate manifestation of silence.

Buddha—The Manifestation of Silence

When Buddha was enlightened on that full moon night in the month of May, he kept silent... He did not say a word for a whole week. Mythology says that this frightened all the angels in heaven—for once in a millennium, does one blossom so fully as Buddha had, and yet he was silent; he was not saying a word! It is said that all the angels approached Buddha and asked him to please say something.

Buddha said, “Those who know, they know even without my saying, and those who do not know, they will not know by my words. Any description of light to a blind man is of no use. To one who has not tasted the ambrosia of the existence of life, there is no point in talking about it. So I am silent.”

How can you convey something so intimate, something so personal?

Not through words—they cannot suffice.

Many scriptures in the past have declared: “Words end where truth begins.”

This argument is very good and so the angels said, “Yes, we agree. What you say is right. But Buddha, consider those who are on the borderline... There are a few who are inbetween—who are neither fully enlightened, nor ignorant. A few words will give them a push. Do speak something. Please say something for their sake... and every word of yours will create that silence.”

The purpose of words is to create silence. If words create more noise, then they have not reached their goal. The words of Buddha would definitely create silence because Buddha is the manifestation of silence.

Silence is the source of life and it is the cure for disease. You might have noticed that when people are angry, they keep silent. They either stay silent or they shout a lot, and then (after shouting) they become silent. Also, when people are sad, they say: “Leave me alone!” They put on a long face and keep silent.

You can easily make out whether someone is in the right frame of mind or not. If they are very silent, then you know that there is something wrong.

If you are sad, you become silent.

If you are angry, you become silent.

If you are ashamed, you become silent.

And, of course, if you are wise, you become silent!

Though again, when you are confronted with ignorance or useless questions, then too you become silent! What else can you do?!

When Jesus was asked, “Are you the Son of God? Come on! Prove it to us!”—he kept silent. That was the wisest thing to do. When the proof of something that is beyond proof is demanded from you, the remedy is silence.

You tell someone that you have a pain in your leg, and he (or she) says, “Come on, prove it to me! How do I believe you?!”

Now, how can you prove your pain?! When you cannot prove something as gross as pain, how can you prove something as intimate as enlightenment? How can you prove something so intimate as Divinity?

So then the wise become silent.

There’s an old Sanskrit proverb that says: “Distortion is the root of speech
