Aged twenty-eight, she was an attractive brunette who had everything to inspire both a lover and marriage candidates, having been a widow for three years and the possessor of a not-inconsiderable fortune. She was, however, capricious and coquettish, and while she didn't discourage men, she didn't actually encourage them either, limiting herself to badinage and flirtatiousness, thus engaging neither her liberty nor her heart.

She lived in one of the most delightful suburbs, a charming spot on the edge of a large forest, and she only came to town to spend a day or even a half day with married, boarding school friends, who in turn came to see her in her delightfully comfortable country home, where she lived with an old cook, who had been in her service for many years, and a maid who also did duty as housekeeper.

The countryside was safe, and while Regine's house was situated in a fairly isolated spot, nothing had ever threatened its peace, and besides, the house was secured with strong locks, and it was known that the three women possessed guns which they would not hesitate to use if necessary.

However, Regine had never returned home so late before, and as she left the station to walk alone along the dark road lined with trees to the side road that led to her house, she felt a sudden and unusual apprehension.

This she attributed to the evening's conversation, during which they had at length discussed a rapist who was terrorizing a certain suburb, luckily far from the one where she lived. Not that she would have been afraid to meet him, she had affirmed, expressing her contempt for the timid creatures whose only defense consisted of screaming and trying to flee, and she contended that these hooligans mostly attacked ugly, mature, or even old women, feminine beauty inspiring them with a kind of awe. She had boldly affirmed that a woman, with a single word, could oblige the most audacious man, be he ever so rustic, to bow to her will.
