Don't panic, it's just your period! Everything you need to know
The idea for "The Big Period Book for Girls" arose from the realization that the topic of menstruation often does not receive the attention and education it deserves. Many girls and young women feel inadequately informed and left alone when they get their first period or are faced with the challenges of the menstrual cycle. This book is intended to fill precisely this gap and offer comprehensive, well-founded information and practical advice.
A ubiquitous topic with little explanation
Although every woman experiences around 450 periods in her lifetime, the subject of menstruation is still considered taboo in many cultures. This means that girls and women often do not receive the support and education they need. There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding periods that can lead to uncertainty and shame. This book aims to debunk these myths and provide clear, science-based information.
A guide for all situations
We have tried to make this book as comprehensive as possible. It not only covers the biological basis of menstruation, but also offers practical tips on menstrual hygiene, dealing with menstrual cramps and period care. We also address the emotional and psychological aspects of menstruation and give advice on how to deal with mood swings and stress.
For an enlightened and self-confident generation
An important aspect of this book is to encourage girls and young women to talk openly about their periods and be proud of their bodies. We hope that this book will help to increase awareness and understanding of menstruation and remove the stigma that is often associated with this topic. A well-informed girl is more confident and better able to cope with the challenges of the menstrual cycle.
A resource for parents and educators
This book is not just for girls, but also for their parents, teachers and carers. It offers valuable insight and advice on how to support girls and help them accept their periods as a natural and positive part of life. We hope that the information and guidance in this book will help to encourage open and honest conversations about periods and improve understanding and support in the family and school.
diversity and inclusivity
We have made sure that this book is diverse and inclusive. Periods affect girls and women of all backgrounds, and we have tried to take into account the different experiences and needs. Whether you are from a big city or a rural area, whether you have cultural or religious differences, this book is designed to provide you with helpful and relevant information.
The scientific background
Our team consists of experts from various fields, including gynecology, psychology, nutrition science and education. We have taken care to ensure that all information in this book is based on the latest scientific findings. This gives you the assurance that the advice and information in this book is sound and reliable.
Long-term health and well-being
Another reason for creating this book is to promote the long-term health and well-being of girls and women. A better understanding of menstruation can help reduce menstrual pain, choose proper menstrual hygiene and identify health problems early. We hope this book helps you to better understand your body and take good care of yourself.
A book that grows with you
Menstruation is a topic that accompanies girls for many years of their lives. We have designed this book so that it can be useful to girls at different stages of life - from their first period to later stages of life. It is a book that you can refer to again and again when you have questions or are looking for information.
Periods, also called menstruation, are a natural and important process in a woman's body. It is a sign that the reproductive system is healthy and functioning properly. In this section, we will examine the biological basis of menstruation in order to gain a deeper understanding of this important process.
Menstruation is a part of the menstrual cycle, a recurring process controlled by the complex interaction of hormones. The menstrual cycle consists of several phases aimed at preparing the woman's body for a possible pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the uterine lining is shed, which is known as menstruation.
The menstrual cycle begins on the first day of menstruation and ends the day before the next menstruation begins. An average menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but can vary between 21 and 35 days. The cycle is divided into four main phases:
menstrual phase (days 1-5)
follicular phase (days 1-13)
ovulation phase (day 14)
luteal phase (days 15-28)
The menstrual phase marks the beginning of the menstrual cycle. During this phase, the uterine lining that was built up in the previous cycle is shed. This causes bleeding that usually lasts between three and seven days. Menstrual blood consists of a mixture of blood, mucous membrane and vaginal secretions.
The follicular phase begins at the same time as the menstrual phase and lasts until ovulation. During this phase, the hormone FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) stimulates the ovaries to cause several follicles to mature. Each follicle contains an immature egg. However, usually only one follicle matures fully. During this phase, the hormone estrogen is also produced, which promotes the development of a new uterine lining.
Ovulation, or ovulation, typically occurs around day 14 of the menstrual cycle. During this phase, luteinizing hormone (LH) is released, causing the mature follicle to rupture and release the egg from the ovary. The egg then travels through the fallopian tube toward the uterus. This is the most fertile phase of the cycle, and if the egg meets a sperm cell, fertilization can occur.
After ovulation, the remaining follicle in the ovary transforms into what is known as the corpus luteum . The corpus luteum produces the hormone progesterone, which further prepares the uterine lining for a possible pregnancy. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates and progesterone levels drop. This causes the uterine lining to be shed and menstruation to begin, initiating a new cycle.
