Essential Piano Technique
books will help students establish
the strong technical foundations that support confident
playing and ensure quick progress in the years to come. The
books introduce young pianists to the main principles of tech-
nique described in my book
The Complete Pianist: from healthy
technique to natural artistry
(Edition Peters, 2020).
The first three books (Primer A, Primer B and Level 1) will
support a student’s development during the first two or
three years of playing. They are technique books rather than
method books, and are designed to be used sequentially
alongside most method, repertoire or theory books. Indivi-
dual exercises can also provide valuable revision material for
students transferring from other teachers.
These are ‘technique’ books in the broadest sense of the word.
They cover all the fundamental skills a pianist needs in order
to play with both technical assurance and artistry: good
co-ordination, freedom of movement, finger independence
and the ability to create a wide range of beautiful sounds.
Primer B develops the techniques already learnt in Primer
A while introducing new skills: cantabile playing, legato and
staccato, phrasing and articulation, scales, broken chords
and glissando.
For the student, each chapter teaches a new aspect of tech-
nique, through original warm-ups, exercises and specially
commissioned pieces, including some student duets and a trio.
‘Circus Parade’, at the end of the book, brings together all
the techniques in an exuberant finale.
For the teacher, there
are detailed notes at the back of the book providing learning
objectives, teaching tips, and access to instructional videos via
QR codes. The Teaching Notes also list some recommended
pieces for developing each technical skill further as well as
page references to sections in
The Complete Pianist
where each
topic is covered in greater detail.
Note-learning is kept as simple as possible, so students pro-
gress quickly and can devote their full attention to
listening
and
feeling
. Musical examples are generally notated within the
limits of the grand stave (without leger lines) but with the
option of transposing up or down octaves to allow the student
