FEARLESS SPEAKING

INTRODUCTION

Back in 2012 when I was in high school, I was called to speak to a group of about 150 students at the school's weekly Christian students gathering, "Fellowship of Christian Students".

Some genius thought it was a good idea to have me make the announcements that day. David, give announcements? How hilarious could this be?

Now my blood pressure must have been around 200 over 120, a result of the extreme tension that swallowed my courage. Standing before this "enormous crowd" of over a hundred, I began to stammer, stutter, mumble and there was this soundtrack playing in my head. The lyrics were, "Get me out of here, get me out of here, get me out of here". As though the mental trauma I was going through wasn't sufficient enough, a girl in the crowd said, "This boy cannot talk". At this point I couldn't decide if to collapse right there or rush back to my seat.

You could hash tag this “the most humiliating day of my life”.

Statistics say that 41 per cent of adults rate the fear of public speaking above any other phobia even the fear of death. Crazy right? And of course you probably must have heard about these stats. But it's a bummer to think that most of us would rather die seating in our chairs than speak to audiences. That was possibly the reason I wanted to collapse as I gave the announcements.

The most terrifying part is that the world's number one phobia is the one phobia that must be overcome to attain the most important skill in life - The Art of Communication.

You will always have to give talks in your profession, to business prospects, to co workers, to higher ups and subordinates, in interviews, in seminars, in school, in project defenses, before strangers and before congregations. Even if it's just an audience of one, its still public speaking.

People who take the lead, take charge and influence their world through speaking move up quickly to the top of their careers and fields of specialty. Society and our communities have proven this time and time again, we choose speakers to lead us because speakers have great propensity to lead.

You have probably struggled with the whole public speaking deal and you may have given up on it altogether. But you see I was were you are right now years ago, I had given up on public speaking and thought this art was meant only for special people. But that horrible experience was a wake up call for me. I realized I needed to do something about it.

I got into my room that evening torn with humiliation, I looked in the mirror and told myself, “David, this has got to change, you can't keep doing this every time you talk to people"

That was my turning point, and the journey has been amazing and rewarding. Today I'm a Speaker, Speaking Coach and Spoken word poet. I've spoken hundreds of times to tens of thousands of people, spoken to 50,000 people in a single meeting (a far stretch from 150), and have been teaching public speaking to hundreds all in the space of seven years.

Public speaking can be an out of this world experience for you too only if you can tell yourself, " I can do this, I can impact and influence audiences with my words. This is not rocket science".
