CHAPTER 1 –
RECLAIM YOUR BODY
1.1 - THE FEMALE
BODY IS NOT A
MEDICAL
PLAYGROUND
Let me guess: You're working hard on your job, trying to
climb the ladder to success and financial freedom,
bringing in the money and maybe even being a provider
for your loved ones. You consider yourself a highly self-
reliant, modern woman trying to prove her worth in this
patriarchal and capitalist world, time and time again.
You're trying to balance your love life, your friendships
and your family life, giving it your all, extracting the last
bit of patience, peace, and love you have within your
body. Matter of fact, at this point you might even feel
completely disconnected from your bodily needs, just
like a walking ball of wavering emotions, irritability, and
exhaustion. You might find your hair and nails are
becoming brittle, you get acne on your chin and facial
hair you have to pluck out weekly – and on top of it all
you have a low libido and are anticipating a physically
and mentally draining period cycle.
Once again, your body is raising all the red flags.
The stress of life has become the current life
experience itself and of course, you are still busy taking
care of anyone and anything but yourself. Am I right?
By no means do I want you to feel guilty or bad about
yourself or your past decisions. I am merely trying to
push you and other women into the harsh realization
that we have been set up to fall into this societal trap of
neglecting our sacred temple, on which our well-being
and our happiness so urgently depend.
Despite finding ourselves in these unfortunate
circumstances for which we can’t take any blame, I still
find it important to hold ourselves accountable for the
ways in which we did or do still betray our bodies.
It's true that we, as women, have been taught to neglect
our needs and simply live with the pains of being a
woman.
I am sure that if you’re reading this, you have been
suffering from a cluster of abnormal hormonal
symptoms such as PMS/PMDD, painful cramps, and a
heavy or irregular cycle, probably since you were a
teen.
How often did we have to hide our struggles with our
period, our bodily and mental health to push through or
simply were denied any help because there were
supposedly no solutions to such a widespread female
health problem ?
Most likely your struggle hasn't even been
acknowledged or treated in the way it should have been
treated – whether it's by women who have just
accepted their pain as their destiny or doctors who
gaslight you into thinking your symptoms are ''perfectly
normal'', ''part of what it's like to be a woman'' and oh,
don't we love this line: "everything's alright with your
bloodwork it must be psychosomatic".
The only solution offered is a synthetic hormonal pill
that will be the fix-it-all solution to your problems, when
in fact it will be the last ingredient added to a disaster-
recipe for your existing hormonal imbalance. I truly
hope to show you a way out of this neglectful
conditioning, the gaslighting, the belief that we as
women should adapt to a toxic masculine world of
constant hustle and strive and a way back into being
present and back inside your body, feeling the calm and
lightness of life you deserve.
Although there are more than enough dietary and
lifestyle factors which can make us sick and leave us
without help, I am asking you to look at your life and
ask yourself where have you built walls between
yourself and your body? How are you dishonoring your
own intuition and body? Do you have trauma or shame
associated with being female/feminine? Did you have to
be strong, a shoulder to lean on growing up? Almost
always there is a certain emotional and mental
component that plays an additional factor in bodily
dysregulations and sicknesses. I am convinced that
rejecting our femininity by playing into the notion that if
women adapt to ''living like a man'' and then we're
automatically promised that we will finally be deemed
as equally worthy and capable as men - is a big
contribution of why this fast, stress-inducing way of life
is a big part of what wreaks havoc on our hormones.
We're socialized to feel shameful about what is
feminine and our needs during our cycles.Things like
going against our bodily needs, not eating enough,
working too much when your body can't even handle it
and not resting pre-, during and a few days post period
are all part of this learned form of self-neglect, which I
strongly believe is a result of being so eager to prove
our worth and strength as women to society. The way
we treat our bodies mirrors back own self-worth and
how much we honor ourselves.
Nothing and really nothing about acting like we have
the same biological predisposition or imitating the same
work and life rhythm as men make you a feminist, ''girl
boss'' or a strong woman – if anything it's anti-feminist
and a crime against our bodies and psyche to live
against our cycles and our natural needs. Anyone and
any system pushing these factors are anti-feminist as
well.
Let's take birth control as an example: it only masks
your symptoms as long as you take it, making you
dependent on it for life and it even ends up increasing
the need for folic acid, magnesium, vitamin B12 and
other minerals that are being depleted by its usage. On
top of that the World Health Organisation classified the
pill as a group 1 carcinogenic. So this hormonal pill
we're given as a remedy for all ill is already a classified
carcinogenic right along with asbestos, mustard gas,
and smoking – and it's still available at your local
gynecologist, ready to be distributed like candy by our
trusted doctors. And if that wasn't already enough –
hormonal contraceptives such as the pill are also
known to increase the risk of cervical, liver, and breast
cancer too. It's been cited by studies to cause blot clots,
mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and
mood swings can cause weight gain, and lack of libido.
All of these symptoms that come with hormonal birth
control actually just bring such a paradox to the whole
purpose of feeling free of symptoms of hormonal
imbalance, feeling fully present in your body and
enjoying your sexuality as you should.
I think what many people fail to realize is that all of
these hormonal contraceptives are synthetic hormones
that differ greatly from our biological hormones and
their natural chemical structure. This also means that
these synthetic hormones are absorbed, metabolized
and excreted differently than our natural hormones.
Natural hormones bind to specific receptors to help
keep your body in balance: estrogen binds to the
estrogen receptors, progesterone binds to the
progesterone receptors, and so on. But synthetic
hormones may bind to the wrong receptors and
therefore actually create more imbalances and nasty
side effects.
It's commonly claimed that birth control ''balances your
hormones'' and this is a blatant lie: birth control
switches off our ovulation and with it, our natural
production of estrogen and progesterone. And even the
periods you experience during the use of birth control
aren't real periods – they are withdrawal bleeds.
You could see it as a kind of chemically induced
''menopause'' which is nonsensical if the goal was to
balance our hormones to feel happy and healthy.
Hormones play a very big part in our neurology and
psychology, so any tampering with our hormones can
cause major changes in our brain and therefore can
also deeply impact our identity, our behaviors and the
beliefs we have !
It is proven to even change our preferences in men and
makes us more attracted to men who have a similar
genetic make-up, which is already an indicator of our
natural biology being so heavily disrupted that we end
up choosing partners that bring a biological
disadvantage to dating and mating purposes.
And while most research has been conducted on the
hormonal pill, these imbalances can of course also be
brought on by other hormonal contraceptives such as
IUD, the patch, hormonal shots, the ring, and
nexplanon for example.
Now that we know that hormonal contraceptives bring
about way more side effects than just breast
tenderness/swelling, irregular bleeding, headaches, and
nausea – which are the only side effects that are
actually mentioned on hormonal contraceptive
packages or at our doctor's offices, if at all. So let's ask
ourselves, who is really profiting off hormonal birth
control? Because it clearly isn't women's health in the
long run.
Let us take back this blind trust in quick solutions and
put more trust in ourselves, our intuition and our bodies
which are our allies and never fail to raise those red
flags to catch our attention.
It is time to reclaim our right to proper healthcare and
our own well-being and happiness, once and for all.
Our bodies are not a medical playground!
1.2 - MEDICAL
GASLIGHTING –
GENDER BIAS IN
HEALTH CARE
How often have I been to the doctors and have been
told that my symptoms must just be in my imagination,
that I'm a ''young, slim and healthy-looking woman'' and
couldn't possibly have any serious health complaints,
and that surely I simply must be too vain about my
looks to even seek out help for my delusional and
frivolous little pains. I can't count the times I haven't
been taken seriously, no matter how serious my worries
were, and have been sent out of the office without
getting any answers to my oh-so-mysterious symptoms.
I thought that maybe I was just unfortunate enough to
meet the seemingly most oblivious doctors at a young
age and at a vulnerable time in my life when I was
uninformed and unsure.
I gave doctors the upper hand over my own body
because I thought they must know better.
But I always had this quiet suspicion, this deep knowing
that the pain I felt was caused by my body first and in
turn affected my psyche – and although psychosomatic
symptoms are a very real possibility - it was NOT the
other way around and I learned the hard way that too
many doctors love to blame women's physical pain as
something purely psychosomatic.
I remember carefully rehearsing questions so I would
not offend the fragile ego of many of my
authoritative,''all-knowing'' and apathetic doctors, only
for them to always sternly dismiss my concerns –
