Introduction

* * *

For as long as I can remember, people around me repeated the same saying: “Fingers are not equal.” It was used to explain poverty, failure, and the gap between the rich and the poor. If a student dropped out of school, the phrase was whispered. If a business collapsed, the saying appeared again. It became a quiet excuse for mediocrity—an acceptance that some are destined to rise while others remain low.

But one day, as I reflected on this proverb, I looked at my own hand. Yes, my fingers were not the same size, but were they unequal in value? The thumb, though shorter, gives strength and grip. The index finger points direction. The middle finger stands tallest. The ring finger carries commitment. The little finger balances everything. Different, yes. Unequal? No. Remove any one finger, and the whole hand suffers.

That day, I realized: fingers are equal—not because they look the same, but because each has its own role, its own power, its own necessity. And so it is with life. People are not born with equal talents, wealth, or opportunities, but everyone has the ability to rise, to learn, to act, and to draw near to God.
