It was more than one could bear! You wake up in the morning, and what’s the first thing you see? That goddamn guy. Forty years old, chubby, balding, wearing shades, his greasy face hidden behind thin, bristly moustache: here he is, that stranger who seems to tail Roberto Fabiani wherever he goes. Amidst the crowd, in the city traffic, outside a shop – he is everywhere.
But why is he following Roberto? Why Roberto – a guy like million others, the drummer in a rock band. Nothing trascendental: a good musician, well-to-do but not wealthy. Why should his heart jump whenever he turns back? But every time he does, Roberto sees that man, who never leaves him alone.
Roberto is playing with his band in the studio. The other musicians are all concentrated on their instruments. They play rock music, and they play it loud and strong and groovy. Mirko continually improvises chords and harmonies on his keyboard, while Carlo, the singer, whispers and shouts in the mic; the English bass player, Mitch, looks as if he is on another planet, as usual. As he plays, Roberto is bothered by a mosquito – fat and full of blood – that keeps buzzing all around his face, unaware of the loud music. Eventually, the mosquito stops on a drum. Roberto is ready to squash it . He waits for the right moment, not to lose the tempo, but the insect flies away, only to land between cymbals. An evil smile appears on Roberto’s lips: just as the song climaxes, he pushes the pedal, squashing the insect in time with the music.
