Analyzing the work of German pharmacists, full autonomous control over their area of expertise exists undisputedly only for those pharmacists working in hospital pharmacy, pharmaceutical industry, research, and regulatory affairs. Even though German community pharmacists are highly trained and respected health care specialists working for the benefit of their patients, they still lack full autonomous control and authority over certain essential areas of their expertise resulting in an incomplete professionalization. Community pharmacists thus need to combine two different identities – being health care professionals and establishing a commercially successful community pharmacy practice. This book illustrates how to achieve those goals by using international best elements to implement new advanced pharmaceutical care practice standards into German community pharmacy – applying for the first time also the theories of the French philosopher Michel Foucault on German community pharmacy.
