It was his idea, selling their comfortable house in the suburbs, quitting his job and investing their life's savings in the K-9 Kountry Klub, a place for city dwellers to board their dogs when they went on vacation or business trips.

Alone since Frank's speeding car skidded on a rain-slicked curve and crashed head-on into a tree, Peg had to keep all the dogs fed, clean their cages, register new guests, collect for those departing, keep books and do the taxes.

She was busy from sunrise to sunset, and sometimes long after dark. It was wearing her out and adding to the normal pain and loneliness of being a widow at thirty-seven with a son and a daughter to raise.

Peg thought her son Bill and daughter Bonnie should help run the place while they were on summer vacation from school. They were both old enough to start learning some responsibility, but she'd gone easy on them since their father died. Maybe too easy.

They were swimming in the creek that was in the back of the rambling old farm house that headquartered the kennel. Tomorrow, she decided, they would all start to work bright and early. Bill could clean the cages and handle the feeding chores. Bonnie would learn to keep books and help take care of the customers.
