Dominik Mikulaschek, born in Linz in 1983, has been working for many years to make knowledge understandable – especially when it comes to animals and their behaviour. Horses fascinate him because they are sensitive, communicate a lot through body language and immediately sense how we are feeling.
This book is therefore not just about facts, but about genuine understanding: why horses sometimes get scared, how trust is built, and how to interact with horses safely, fairly and lovingly.
Step by step, a love of horses turns into knowledge about horses – and curiosity turns into real horse whispering skills.

Imagine opening a gate. Behind it lies no ordinary place, but a world full of hoofbeats, warm breath, soft nostrils and large, intelligent eyes. A world where friendship is not spoken, but felt. Welcome to the world of horses. Perhaps you have loved horses for a long time. Perhaps you stroked your first pony and felt a tingling sensation in your stomach. Or maybe you dream of galloping across a meadow one day, the wind in your face and a horse by your side that trusts you. No matter where you are right now, this book will take you on a journey into the fascinating world of horses. Horses have been accompanying humans for thousands of years. They were helpers in the fields, courageous companions in wars, fast travel partners and loyal friends. Today, for many people, they are one thing above all else: soulmates. Animals with whom you can laugh, learn, grow and be still. What makes horses so special is their combination of strength and gentleness. A horse can weigh several hundred kilograms, run at lightning speed and make huge jumps – and still carefully take a carrot from your hand. This combination fascinates people all over the world. But horses are not only beautiful and strong. They are also incredibly sensitive. They can sense whether you are nervous, sad, happy or brave. Sometimes it even seems as if they can read your mind. In reality, they are simply observing you very closely. They notice every little movement, every tension in your body and even your mood. This is where the secret of horse whisperers begins. A horse whisperer is not a person with magical powers. She has no spell book and no secret incantations. Her "magic" is knowledge, patience and empathy. She understands how horses think, feel and communicate with each other. And because she understands this, she can interact with them in a way that builds trust. Trust is the most important word in the horse universe. A horse will only carry you safely on its back if it feels comfortable with you. It will only follow yo ely if it trusts you. And it will only show you its calm, friendly side if it feels understood. This trust grows step by step – just like a friendship. Perhaps you have already experienced how special it feels when a horse lowers its head towards you, stands calmly beside you or follows you gently. These moments are little miracles. They show that a connection has been formed that cannot be bought or forced. In this book, you will discover many things that will help you understand horses better. You will learn why horses move their ears, what their tails reveal, why they are herd animals and what their needs are. You will learn how to handle them safely, care for them and read their language. And, of course, you can expect to learn many amazing facts. Did you know, for example, that horses can sleep standing up? Or that they recognise their friends and can even long for them? That their eyes are among the largest in the animal kingdom? Or that they can remember places where they have been frightened – even after a long time? All these small and large wonders make horses so fascinating. But this book is not just about imparting knowledge. It is also meant to encourage you. Maybe you want to ride later, help out at the stable, have your own pony to look after, or simply understand horses even better. No matter what your goal is, every journey begins with curiosity. Curiosity is the superpower of all horse girls. It lets you ask questions, observe, try things out and learn. It helps you to remain patient when something doesn't work right away. And it ensures that you can always be amazed – even by things that others have long overlooked. As you read this book, imagine yourself standing next to a horse. You hear its breathing, feel its warmth and notice every little movement. This is exactly how true understanding comes about: through attention. You may not be a perfect horse expert by the end of this book – and that's not necessary. But you will have something much more valuable: a feeling for horses. An understanding of how they live, think and feel. And that is the first step to becoming a horse whisperer. So get ready for amazing facts, exciting discoveries and many "aha" moments. Open your heart, your eyes and your imagination. The adventure begins now.
How horses really think
Horses are different from humans – and that's what makes them so exciting. To become a true horse whisperer, you need to understand one thing above all else: horses don't think in words. They think in images, feelings, memories and lightning-fast reactions. A horse doesn't think twice about whether something might be dangerous – it senses it immediately. That's because horses are flight animals. This means that they have survived in the wild because they would rather run away too quickly than react too late. When something rustles in the bushes, a horse doesn't ask, "Is that just the wind?" It thinks, "Danger!" and its body is immediately ready. This is precisely why horses are sometimes frightened by things that seem completely harmless to us: a fluttering jacket, a bucket tipping over, a shadow on the ground or a sudden noise. This is not stupidity or intentional behaviour – it is an ancient safety programme that is built into them. And now comes the surprising part: horses are nevertheless incredibly intelligent. They can learn to remember things, understand rules and recognise people. They recognise voices, footsteps and even small habits. Many horses know exactly whether you have a treat with you – and they also know who is more likely to give them one than others. Horses learn mainly through repetition and experiences that feel good or bad. If something is pleasant, they remember it. If something is frightening, they remember it even more. That's why it's so important to stay calm, be fair and make your horse feel safe. Because a horse is always looking for that feeling of "Am I safe here?" If the answer is "yes", it becomes curious, attentive and friendly. If the answer is "no", it becomes restless, tense or tries to flee. Horses are also masters of observation. They see the smallest movements and sense tension in the body. If you are nervous, you may be a little stiffer, breathe more shallowly, move more hectically – and the horse notices this immediately. Many people believe that horses sense fear like magic. In reality, they simply read your body like you read a book. And because horses are herd animals, they are constantly watching to see if someone near them is calm or stressed. In a herd, horses often follow the one who is calmest and most attentive. This is exactly why "horse whispering" works so well: don't raise your voice, don't fight, don't force – instead, be clear, be calm and understand what the horse needs at that moment. Another important point: horses live much more in the present than we do. If you fell over yesterday, you might think about it all day long. A horse usually thinks, "That was yesterday." But if it was very frightened, it may remember the feeling. Then it needs time to regain trust. That's why patience is so important. And another thing: horses have friends. Yes, real friends. In a herd, they often stand next to certain horses, groom each other, eat together and seek each other's company. They can even become sad when a friend is gone. This shows how social and sensitive they are. When you understand all this, you begin to see horses in a different light. Then you realise that a horse is not "stubborn" when it stands still. Perhaps it is afraid or does not understand you. A horse is not "naughty" when it pushes. Perhaps it is excited or has learned that it can get away with it. And a horse is not "mean" when it kicks out. Perhaps it just wants to say, "Please, I need some space." As soon as you begin to understand horses in this way, you automatically become calmer, clearer and fairer. And that's when something special happens: horses begin to trust you.
